Personal Training | College Board OK 's Renewal and Rec Fitness ...

The Genesee Community College Board of Trustees this week approved a new Fitness and Recreation Management degree program proposed by the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Eunice M. Bellinger and the Director of Health and Physical Education Rebecca L. Dziekan.

The program adds an academic subject for students wishing to pursue a career in personal training, as well as a track for students interested? In the management of golf. Both fields are growing rapidly throughout the western New York.

The redesigned program will now be submitted to the State University of New York, then to New York State Department of Education for review and approval.

Students completing the program receive the Associate in Applied Science, and possess the necessary academic credentials to find employment immediately. As part of their academic requirements, students complete a semester-long co-op or internship in a work environment.

Graduates in the personal training field can work as paraprofessionals or athletic trainer, or as personal trainers. Personal trainers often employed by health centers and fitness, health organizations and recreation agencies, helping people of all ages to learn skills of fitness, including weight loss, cardiovascular endurance and conditioning general. A growing number of doctors and health professionals recommend the use of personal trainers for people facing health challenges or disease and healthy people looking to meet new fitness goals.

Graduates in the field of golf management can work as officers or directors of golf clubs, golf instructors, and contractors to golf clubs and other recreational facilities. Golf is a sport that is growing rapidly, and golf facilities and golf-related programs continue to expand throughout the region. The growing popularity of golf among older adults, a growing portion of the area 's population, means that employment opportunities in the field continue to grow over the next decade.

Students in the personal training track completed science courses for health coaching, personal training, and emergency response. Students on the issue of complete golf management courses in teaching methodology, golf course management and planning, lawn and pest management, and equipment design. Students in both concentrations also complete a variety of general education courses, including mathematics, accounting, information systems, business and liberal arts electives.

"Our fitness and recreation program management is strong, but last minute the program in two academic concentrations to be good students and good for our communities," said Dziekan trustees. "The jobs in both personal training and management of golf courses are on the rise, and this is a good time for students to enter these professions.
