(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky's lawyers said they tried to quit at the start of jury selection in his child sex abuse trial because they weren't given enough time to prepare, raising an argument on the trial's speed that could become the thrust of an appeal.

And one of the jurors who convicted Sandusky of 45 child sex abuse counts said Saturday he was swayed by the "very convincing" testimony of eight accusers who said the retired Penn State assistant football coach molested them for years.

"It's hard to judge character on the stand, because you don't know these kids," juror Joshua Harper told NBC's "Today" show. "But most were very credible ? I would say all."

A day after Sandusky's conviction, his lawyers disclosed Saturday they felt too unprepared to adequately defend him because of how quickly the case was brought to trial. Experts have said the seven months between Sandusky's November arrest and trial was fast-paced by Pennsylvania standards.

"We told the trial court, the Superior Court and the Supreme Court we were not prepared to proceed to trial in June due to numerous issues, and we asked to withdraw from the case for those reasons," attorney Joe Amendola told The Associated Press.

The issues included a scheduling conflict with a defense team member and the need to read a cache of documents produced by a lengthy grand jury investigation. Judge John Cleland denied their request.

The attorneys raised other issues that could be part of the future appeal, saying a mistrial was sought and denied over a repetition at trial of a brief part of a November interview Sandusky had with NBC's Bob Costas.

Jurors in the two-week trial convicted Sandusky of 45 of the 48 counts against him, meaning Sandusky, 68, likely will die in prison.

Harper said the accusers who testified one by one of horrific abuse at Sandusky's hands were each believable, "but then also the fact that we saw this corroborating story between all of them. It was very convincing."

Then Sandusky's impassive face when the verdict was read was confirmation for the jury, he said.

"I looked at him during the reading of the verdict and just the look on his face. No real emotion," he said, "because he knew it was true."

Harper said jurors had some issues with the testimony of Mike McQueary, a then-assistant who said he saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in the Penn State showers in 2001; jurors acquitted Sandusky on one count relating to the incident.

The case is poised to move to an investigation of university officials' role in reporting the charges; two ex-school administrators face trial on charges they didn't properly report McQueary's account of the suspected abuse in 2001.

Almost immediately after the verdict, Penn State President Rodney Erickson signaled an openness to quickly settle potential civil lawsuits arising from the convictions, saying the school "wants to provide a forum where the university can privately, expeditiously and fairly address the victims' concerns and compensate them for claims."

The university recently reported a $1.8 billion endowment. But both sides have reasons not to want to go to court, said Jason Kutulakis, a Harrisburg-area lawyer who specializes in child welfare and juvenile law. Victims are reluctant to get on the stand and have their credibility attacked, he said.

But "Penn State's got so much egg on their face, they probably just want to make it all go away," he said.

For now, the school is facing one lawsuit from an accuser, Travis Weaver, who was not among those represented in the criminal case against Sandusky.

Lawyers for McQueary, who testified against Sandusky, have signaled their intent to sue, along with a lawyer for one accuser, so-called Victim 5.

Jeff Anderson, who represents Weaver, said that he represents more victims of Sandusky's and that he will ask the court to allow him to begin seeking information from Penn State in Weaver's case.

The next step is to determine the extent of Penn State's culpability, lawyers say. In part, that means finding out who in the university's upper ranks knew Sandusky was preying on boys and could have stopped it.

The former Penn State officials facing charges, athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz, are charged with lying to a grand jury about what they knew of a 2001 incident in which McQueary said he saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a football team shower.

A separate investigation by ex-FBI director Louis Freeh, who was hired by Penn State's board of trustees to investigate the university's handling of the Sandusky allegations, is due later this summer.

Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno was fired for a failure of leadership for not going to the police after McQueary told him about that incident. The scandal also caused the departure of university president Graham Spanier.

Philadelphia-based lawyer Fortunato Perri Jr., who followed the trial, said the jury's dismissal of the charge involving the 2001 shower incident could help Curley and Schultz' defense.

"You've now had a jury kind of preview your case with respect to the credibility of McQueary, and they didn't believe him," Perri said. "Who knows if the next jury would believe him or not believe him?"

But the administrators' attorneys would probably be precluded from introducing the acquittal evidence at the separate trial, Perri said.

Sandusky's sentencing is expected to occur in about three months; an exact date hasn't been set. Because of the severity of the charges and mandatory minimum sentences, he faces an effective life sentence.

Until his next court date, Sandusky is one of 272 inmates at the Centre County Correctional Facility, seven miles from the Penn State campus. He was kept under watch overnight and is allowed access to some personal items including a prayer book, and can get visits from family, friends and attorneys.

Rominger said he planned to visit him on Sunday.

Cyborg system stifles your need to drink water

7 hrs.

The Japanese design studio Takram was asked to design a water bottle for people to use after a hypothetical future environmental disaster. Takram, imagining what a world would be like with rising sea levels and radioactive disasters, thought that we probably wouldn?t be carrying around water bottles. Instead, they designed an entirely new organ system, to be implanted in the body, that would mean we used less water in the first place.

Its solution, called the Hydrolemic System, involves both harvesting more moisture from the air than our current unmodified bodies are capable of, and also doing more to retain the water we have. The company imagines that system would require us to drink 0.1 cups of water a day.

Inserts that go in our noses convert moisture in the air we breathe into water, and other inserts at the ends of our renal and digestive systems keep water from leaving by those routes. A collar on our neck helps prevent perspiration by turning our body heat into electricity, so it doesn?t make us perspire, losing precious liquid.

Click through the slide show for more details.

Let's?hope for a world in which our designers are just designing water bottles with more convenient handles, rather than ones you have to go to the hospital to have installed.

How to Get Rid of Bloating | HEALTH BENEFITS

Suffering from belly bloat is a common but annoying disorder. You feel uncomfortable, lethargic, unmotivated, embarrassed because of your bulging belly and the rumble it makes, and are sometimes in pain.

Let us look at how to stop bloating and the basic lifestyle changes you can implement which are especially effective if you feel bloated after eating.

Stop overeating

Eat smaller, more frequent meals for better health and a bloat-free waistline.

Change your eating habits

Eating quickly increases pressure on your stomach and produces more gas. Sit down, chew your food well, and eat your meals in a leisurely manner, giving the food plenty of time to digest.

Drinking tea or coffee on the run is equally bad with excess air accompanying each sip and gulp. Savor your beverages by drinking them slowly.

Limit sugar substitutes

Sodas, sweets and chewing gum contain huge quantities of artificial sweeteners, especially sorbitol and xylitol which many people find difficult to digest, resulting in bloating, gas and diarrhea. Rather have real sugar than substitutes.

Cut out sodas

The bubbles in fizzy drinks cause bloating. Also refrain from drinking excessively hot or cold beverages.

Stop eating junk and processed food

Fried, oily food and high salt content cause bloating.

Abstain from carbohydrates at night

Bread and pasta cause you to retain water. Avoid eating them at night to be puff-free the next morning.

Early morning water and lemon juice

Start your day by drinking a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon; it speeds up waste elimination and removes toxins.

Eat potassium rich foods

Bananas, cantaloupe, mangoes, spinach, tomatoes, nuts, asparagus and fresh chopped parsley regulate the fluid balance in your body and stop bloating.

If you suffer from constipation, eating sufficient fruit, vegetables and high fiber, such as oatmeal, will improve your digestion and remedy your bloating problem.

Drink water

Water flushes out your system and aids digestion. Instead of alcohol, caffeine and colas, drink plain water and natural teas.

Limit excess air

Do not eat and talk at the same time, drink out of a straw, chew gum nor smoke because the surplus air accompanying these activities causes you to bloat.

Eat foods easily digested by your body

Bland foods, such as fish, chicken, soya based foods, yogurt and rice do not tax your digestive system.

Limit gas producing foods

Notice which raw vegetables cause you to bloat, then either boil them or do not eat them at all. The cellulose in cabbage, peas and beans is hard to digest and may cause you to puff up.

Other common gas producing foods are cruciferous vegetables, root vegetables, lentils, prunes and garlic.

Menstruation

Bloating, together with water weight gain and mood swings, are associated with premenstrual tension. Ensure you get 1200 milligrams calcium and 200 to 400 milligrams magnesium daily. Both nutrients help relieve PMS symptoms, including bloating. If you wish, take Midol which contains a mild diuretic.

Natural remedies

Add turmeric, coriander, caraway and cumin when cooking.

Naturists claim teas made of ginger, savory from the mint family, lime from a linden tree, peppermint, rosemary, and caraway are effective for bloating relief.

They may be right because ginger tea helps with stomach upsets and peppermint oil in tea or warm water after a big meal aids digestion.

Exercise

Walking for 15 to 20 minutes a day moves food through your digestive tract, thereby reducing bloating and combating constipation. Other benefits include less severe menstrual cramps, eliminating toxins by perspiring, and shedding body fat.

Apply pressure

Massaging your abdomen helps evacuate gas and reduces bloating. Start by pressing your fingers near your right hip, slide up towards the ribs, move across and down in a circular motion.

Supplements and home remedies

Taking a digestive enzyme with each meal provides relief, especially when bloating results from a problem with your digestive tract, such as diverticulosis. Obtain digestive enzymes with the active ingredients lipase, protease and amylase, from any health store. Restaurant owners should actually hand out digestive enzymes instead of after-dinner mints to all patrons who selected anything other than raw foods from their menus.

Probiotics are 'good bacteria' which help keep you regular and bloat-free. Your intestinal tract has loads of bacteria, some beneficial, some harmful, which play an important role in the functioning of your digestive and immune systems.

Probiotics encourage the growth and replenishment of healthy microflora. They crowd out the bad bacteria which cause disease, yeasts and parasites in your intestines, they help digest and absorb your food, eliminate wastes and toxins by restoring normal and regular bowel function, and maintain a healthy intestinal function.

Ideally 85% of your bacteria should be friendly with 15% unfriendly. Probiotic supplements can be found in capsule, powder or liquid form, or in foods such as kefir and yogurt.

If you do not consume enough fruit and vegetables, take nutritional supplements that contain dietary fibers especially during the holidays or when celebrating to better handle the foods that cause you to swell up.

Apple cider vinegar helps ease digestive symptoms and gets rid of bloating and gas pain.

Lactobacillus supplements also help maintain intestinal health.

Bismuth, the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol, is an element on the periodic table. 100% natural, taken before or directly after a meal reduces swelling caused by food allergies and neutralizes the odor of your flatulence.

Medication

If you take antibiotics, which destroy your friendly bacteria, take B complex vitamins too.

Some oral contraceptive pills cause your stomach to distend, in which case ask your physician to prescribe a different one.

Once you incorporate these lifestyle changes, they should cure you or at least relieve bloating.

If your condition persists, let us look at what else it might be and what you can do about it.

Food allergy

If you bloat after eating certain foods, keep a food journal where you write down everything you eat, together with any symptoms which appear. Rotate foods until you identify which foods trigger bloating and avoid them.

Although you may not test positive for food allergies, you may have a food intolerance. Common culprits include yeast, wheat, where the gluten causes excess gas to be produced, and milk.

Lactose intolerance

This means your body does not produce the enzyme lactase and your digestive system cannot digest the lactose in dairy foods. It then ferments and forms gases which overstretch your bowel.

How do you know if you are lactose intolerant? Drink a glass of milk. If you experience gas, bloating or diarrhea, avoid dairy products or drink lactose free milk.

Yogurt's active bacteria cultures produce lactase, so if you want to eat cheese without bloating afterwards, add a bowl of yogurt to your morning ritual.

Irritable bowel syndrome

IBS, characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea, may be the cause of your bloating.

Eat more fiber and give up coffee, cigarettes and spicy foods which irritate your colon.

Some people swear by going on a detoxification diet two or three times a year to give your body a chance to cleanse itself of accumulated toxins.

Diabetes

Diabetics often have problems with bloating and diarrhea, especially if they take large doses of metformin or glucophage.

Diabetics with nerve damage in their stomach may find food collects but does not empty properly, resulting in excessive belching. Medication eases this problem.

Medication

Although over-the-counter products offer quick relief by suppressing the symptoms, the benefits will be short-lived because they do not eliminate the cause.

Common effective medications such as Gas-X, Beano, Phazyme and Flatulex, when taken with each meal, help break up gas pockets in the stomach, thereby relieving bloating and gas pain.

The pain is not actually caused by your swollen stomach but by abdominal contractions not synchronizing properly. When your intestinal wall pulls in different directions it feels like stomach cramps.

Most bloating medication contain enzymes like alpha-galactosidase which help digest the sugars in carbohydrates, the main culprit of your indigestion problems.

Pink Pepto-Bismol type products have a salicylate ingredient which is like aspirin. It will alleviate some of your abdominal pain but if it disagrees with you, try Gas-X or Phazyme which contain simethicone.

Activated charcoal

Consider using this over-the-counter supplement. When taken with meals, it prevents or at least reduces the amount of gas produced.

It sometimes causes irregular looking stools and constipation so do not be alarmed, and in case it affects the absorption of prescription medicine, take it an hour or two after any scheduled medication.

Tips and warning

Bloating and gas pain should dissipate quite quickly. If not, if it becomes more than a slight annoyance, or if accompanied by bloody or tarry stools, fever, night sweats or weight loss, consult your doctor.

He might suggest a colonoscopy to help him diagnose your problem. Endure it because your colon plays a major role in your life and until it is sorted out, you will feel unwell. Once he determines the medical cause, he will treat and cure you of your suffering.[Refer:singlecupcoffeemakerschoice.com]

NEPArtisan ? Immigrants (Legal & Illegal) Are Making America Better

Immigration is the hot topic-of-the-week.

Since, last Friday, President Obama announced that those here illegally are safe. This makes sane sense because, you know, us ?Americans? came here when there were already people and said this land is our land, no longer your land. Move west. Until we (America) wanted the west and said keep going until you hit the ocean. Then the choice was become ?American? or else.

So a nation founded on illegal immigration has a problem with immigration (mainly illegal, but I?m sure people wouldn?t want legal immigrants from some countries.) Why you must have documents that you are here legally because otherwise you are thought to be a bad person.

Jorge Rmoney, Jr., Republican Presidential candidate loser of 2012, even called for ?self-deportation?, because I?m sure anyone who decided to risk their lives and wanted a better life and was having a better life than back home, will decide it?s time to go back home. Home to terrible living and working conditions and wait years to get the proper paperwork to come and get the same job and living conditions they just had.

Some could wait 10 years to even get a chance to come to America legally. Could you wait that long and live with nothing? Then expect to start living again once you return to America? What logic is that?

Here?s the simplest solution that benefits everyone, since we must get the illegals out! They?re taking our jobs!

The wars are winding down and veteran are unemployed. Veterans have become the topic priority in getting jobs. Every company (that gets a big tax break) for hiring veterans are shouting from their multi-story building ? look how great we are! We?re hiring veterans!

But what about the veterans not hired?

Illegal immigrants are still a problem (even if they?re small business owners or going to school.) Remember the Right-Wing-Media and Republicans say illegals are bad.

Solution

Lets basically declare martial law. Have the soldiers in their tanks, Humvee, and helicopters patrolling our streets searching out the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants.

It?s the new war! The war on our own!

Remember Japanese descendants were rounded up in World War II, only know everyone would be a suspect, unless you can prove identification.

Identification another problem

Everyone knows how Republicans are taking voting rights away because there is 1 in 10,000? or more chance someone may get a voting ballot in someone?s else name yet not actually vote or other made-up excuse. Well those people are out of luck.

80-year-olds with no (long-form) birth certificate, no photo identification? You?re considered illegal and will be locked up. I don?t want to hear how you?ve voted in every election since Kennedy, not my problem. You?ve had years to get a photo taken, now you?re locked up.

Military state

By having the military patrol our streets it accomplishes 2 major issues: 1., it keeps soldiers employed, 2., they?ll be getting everyone (illegal & legal) immigrants without proper identification out of the communities. This will result in more job openings for people with proper identification.

Grandma, sorry but, you?ll be locked up. Our soldiers need jobs and I don?t know who you really are.

Or

Could we just let people who are here, stay here? If someone is committing a crime, shouldn?t we expect and hope and prepare our policing officials with the tools they need to stop crimes. If you?re here contributing to society, making yourself, your family, your community better, never causing a problem, can?t we just let you be?

That sounds a lot similar.

PFT: Vitt wonders if evidence was 'falsified'

Roger GoodellAP

Lawyer Peter Ginsberg wasn?t the only one who had tough words for Commissioner Roger Goodell at Monday?s appeal hearing in the bounty case. ?Browns linebacker Scott Fujita was far more brief, and far more pointed.

?I saw [Goodell] in the [appeal] hearings and he offered to shake all of our hands,? Fujita told Dave Zirin of SiriusXM Radio?s Edge of Sports Radio, via SI.com. ??Some of the other players didn?t, but I went ahead and shook his hand, and I just said to him, ?What the hell are you doing, Roger???

How did the Commissioner respond?

?He had nothing to say,? Fujita said. ??His face sure turned red, though.?

So much for the draft-night man hugs.

Fujita also addressed the merits of the situation, echoing the notion that the Saints had a pay-for-performance system coupled with tough talk but no deliberate intent to injure.

?I know exactly what [happened] and what didn?t,? Fujita said. ??The problem with this whole thing is that it?s just an unfortunate situation where you have a defensive coordinator [Gregg Williams] who I like a lot, but said a lot of really vulgar, inappropriate, outlandish things. ?You couple that with some guys who occasionally throw in some money for big plays ? which I have admitted to doing ? and it becomes a perfect storm, and also it comes at a time politically when I think the league was looking for something like this.

?So, it?s unfortunate. It?s unfortunate that a lot of players have been dragged into it when the reality is it?s just a kind of loose, joking around, performance-type system of motivation coupled with some really, really inappropriate language that I?m sensitive to, but again, it is just language.?

Fujita apparently wants the NFL to focus on what the program was, and to clarify what it wasn?t.

?People said I was stupid for confessing to paying for big plays. ?I didn?t think of that as a big deal,? Fujita said. ??Is it against the rules? ?Technically, yeah, it?s against the rules, but that?s the way it was done when I was a young player and I?m not ashamed of that. ?If that?s what I?m going down for, let?s call it for what it is. ?The problem is that the league has billed this thing as being this super-organized pay-to-injure scheme, which it never was.

?Now, it turns out when the evidence is getting released that there is actually very little to nothing on anything pay-to-injure related, especially as it pertains to me. ?So, again, if it?s pay-for-performance, let?s call it what it is, and if I have to take my medicine for that, I?ll do that, and we?ll move on, but that?s not what the league has billed this as.?

Fujita explained that the issue is more about the money he?ll lose during a three-game suspension.

?Another thing I have a hard time with is that a lot of people just say, ?You only have a couple games [suspension]. ?Just be glad with what you got. ?Stop complaining and move on.? ?It?s more than just a couple games,? Fujita said. ??My reputation is a lot more valuable to me than three game checks. ?So for someone to say ?just take your medicine and move on,? my response is no. ?If you?re accused of something you didn?t do, and they were going to not only ruin your reputation, but also take a lot of money away from you, you would not just lie down. ?So it?s troubling. ?It?s been hard for me. ?It?s been a stress at home. ?I?m lucky to have such a supportive family with young kids who don?t understand any of this kind of stuff so that brightens my day, but it has been very hard for me.?

The good news is that the discussion of the actual or perceived flaws in the NFL?s investigation could be prompting the league to focus on precisely why the players are being disciplined ? for contributing to and participating in a pay-for-performance system that created an incentive to inflict injury on opponents (regardless of whether they actually did) and not for deliberately attempting to inflict injury in exchange for cash.

The bad news is that it?s too late to put the bounty toothpaste back in the tube. ?The Saints were painted as a marauding gang of Gilloolys in March; calling it what it really was in June will do nothing to change the perception that has been cemented into the public?s collective consciousness.

How Justin Bieber Found His Hip-Hop Swag

Following the release of his hip-hop-heavy Believe, MTV News looks at the young pop star's swaggiest moments.
By Rob Markman, with additional reporting by Jocelyn Vena

<P>You'd think a 1995 collaboration between the King of Pop, Michael Jackson and rap's widely recognized G.O.A.T., the Notorious B.I.G., would have made a bigger wave, but when MJ released <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2w1KXE5QMQ" target="_blank">"This Time Around"</a> with Biggie Smalls 17 years ago, mixing pop with hip-hop was still very taboo. Despite the top billing, the track hit with a relative thud. The truth is it just didn't feel organic, it's not like Mike grew up listening to rap in Gary, Indiana, in the 1960s, the art form as we know it today just didn't exist.</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> was a 1-year old when the King of Pop snagged the King of Hip-Hop for a feature. That's why Bieber mixes hip-hop so seamlessly on his new album <i>Believe.</i></P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Scooter Braun Knows Justin Bieber Is 'Authentic'" id="vid:793827" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"One, I think they know it's authentic and two, you got to remember Justin's past," JB's manager Scooter Braun told MTV News. Happy 30th Birthday, Prince William!

It's good to be Prince William.

The Prince of Wales, Duke of Cambridge, RAF rescue pilot and husband of Kate Middleton celebrates his birthday today. Yep, Wills turns the big 3-0!

William, who got married in 2011, has been in the public spotlight since infancy, but has become a remarkably grounded and accomplished guy.

Happy birthday big guy!

Prince William Waves

While it's hardly cause for celebration, considering the reason we're talking about it in the first place, William also inherits his share of his late mother's estate today.

The sizable inheritance - estimated around $20 million - left him by Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997, is finally available to him on his 30th birthday.

No doubt William will put those pounds to good use for one of his many charities. It's not like he's the type to splurge ... or was hard up for money to start with.

"Whatever the financial position might be, you will see no obvious change of lifestyle over the coming weeks or months," said a royal aide, stating the obvious.

As for his big plans today? "William is spending the day working," a royal source said. "He will be in Gloucestershire to complete a search and rescue course. "

"But he will be marking [his birthday] later. He's going to be having a private celebration with friends and family. Very low-key. Just a simple celebration."

Sounds perfect. In honor of the occasion fit for a king, or at least a duke, click to enlarge some of our favorite Prince William and Kate Middleton pictures below!

Syrian fighter pilot defects to Jordan, gets asylum

AMMAN (Reuters) - A Syrian air force pilot flew his MiG-21 fighter plane over the border to Jordan and was granted political asylum on Thursday, the first defection with a military aircraft since the start of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

Colonel Hassan Hamada landed at the King Hussein military air base 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Amman and immediately asked for sanctuary, Jordanian officials told Reuters.

"The cabinet has decided to grant the Syrian pilot political asylum upon his request," Jordanian Minister of State for Information Samih al-Maaytah told Reuters.

Syria's Defense Ministry called the pilot a "traitor to his country and his military honor" saying it would punish Hamada under military law and was in contact with Jordan to retrieve the aircraft.

In Washington, the Pentagon was delighted.

"We very much welcome the pilot's decision to do the right thing," said spokesman George Little.

"We have long called for members of the Syrian armed forces and members of the Syrian regime to defect and to abandon their positions rather than be complicit in the regime's atrocities."

The defection will boost the morale of the rebels as Assad's forces intensify efforts to crush the uprising and international peace efforts are stalled.

Thousands of soldiers have deserted in the 15 months since the revolt broke out and they now form the backbone of the rebel army. But unlike last year's uprisings in Libya and Yemen, no members of Assad's inner circle have broken with him.

The army maintained its bombardment of downtown areas of Homs on Thursday despite a temporary truce that had been agreed to allow the evacuation of civilians and the wounded.

Aid workers from the International Committee of the Red Cross and Syrian Arab Red Crescent were forced to turn back because of shooting.

"We could not identify the source of the shooting," said ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan.

"We will still attempt to enter the affected areas of Homs city but we cannot confirm the timing for that. Our dialogue with the parties continues," Hassan said. The aid workers returned to Damascus.

Syrian state television blamed "armed terrorist groups" for thwarting the Red Cross mission while opposition activists in the city said the heavy army shelling on Sunni Muslim neighborhoods of Homs prevented evacuation of civilians.

"The army has no intention of relieving the humanitarian situation. They want Homs destroyed," a Homs-based activist, Abu Salah, told Reuters.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 125 people were killed around the country during the day, with at least 18 of them in Homs.

SHELLING IN DAMASCUS SUBURB

In Douma, a conservative Sunni suburb of Damascus, army shelling killed at least 20 people as rebels fought tank-backed forces to prevent them from advancing into the district, home to 300,000 people, opposition activists said.

Assad, a member of Syria's Alawite minority, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, has sent tanks across the country to put down the mostly Sunni-led uprising, which started with peaceful demonstrations and was later coupled with an armed insurgency against his rule that's began in 2000, when he inherited power from his late father.

Opposition sources said pilot Hamada is a 44-year-old Sunni Muslim from Idlib province and he had smuggled his family to Turkey before his dramatic defection.

His hometown Kfar Takharim has been repeatedly shelled in the past several months and suffered intense artillery and helicopter bombardments in the last few days, opposition campaigners who spoke to his family said.

Many air force personnel as well as army soldiers are from Syria's Sunni majority, although intelligence and senior officers are largely Alawite.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies says the air force has 365 combat capable aircraft, including 50 MiG-23 Flogger and MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters and 40,000 personnel - a reflection of the overwhelming military advantage Assad has over his poorly-equipped foes.

The most prominent defection so far in the conflict was that of Colonel Riad al-Asaad last July, who helped set up the rebel Free Syria Army after taking refuge in Turkey. Last week Brigadier General Ahmad Berro, head of a tank unit in Aleppo province, fled with his family, also to Turkey.

The defection could complicate the international scenarios of a conflict that many governments fear could spread beyond Syria and throughout the already volatile Middle East.

Ties between Jordan and Syria were already strained - Jordan has criticized Assad over his crackdown on the uprising but has been restrained in its rhetoric.

Amman is nervous over a possible Syrian military reaction after months of border tension as thousands of Syrians flee the violence to Jordan.

A Jordanian official, who asked not to be named, said the incident with the pilot was "difficult to handle".

RUSSIAN HELICOPTERS

The United Nations says more than 10,000 people have been killed by Assad's forces during the conflict. The government says at least 2,600 members of the military and security forces have been killed by what it characterizes as a plot by foreign-backed "Islamist terrorists" to bring it down.

With a joint U.N.-Arab League ceasefire plan in tatters and the international community divided, world leaders and diplomats have been unable to stop the bloodshed.

Moscow confirmed on Thursday that it was trying to send repaired combat helicopters to Syria but said they could "be used only for repelling foreign aggression and not against peaceful demonstrators".

Russia, one of Assad's main suppliers of military equipment, has shielded its long-standing ally Syria from tougher U.N. sanctions. It says the solution must come through political dialogue, an approach most of the Syrian opposition rejects.

The Arab League's deputy secretary general, Ahmed Ben Helli, criticized Russia on Thursday for selling arms to Syria and said U.N. sanctions could be needed to force Assad and the rebels to implement international envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan.

"Any assistance in aiding violence should be stopped. When you deliver military equipment you are helping to kill people. That should be stopped," he told Russia's Interfax news agency.

Real estate on the rebound? - Journal of the San Juan Islands

More interest. More volume. More offers, and more sales.

The pulse of San Juan County?s real estate market began to quicken in the past two months. And while the median price of a home sale remains below the same mark of a year ago, $579,000 compared to $597,000 in 2011, an increase in property sales and transactions has San Juan County Land Bank officials breathing just a bit easier, for the moment.

?The first three months of the year were miserable,? Land Bank Director Lincoln Bormann said. ?Things started picking up in April and May was pretty good. So far, June has been significantly better.?

In May, the Land Bank saw one of its biggest one-month gains from its principle funding source, a 1-percent excise tax on nearly all local real estate sales. That tax delivered $136,627 in revenue to the publicly owned land conservation agency?s bottom line in the month of May. The mark exceeds all the previous monthly marks dating back to December 2011.

Bormann is keeping his fingers crossed that ? the momentum of May is no fluke.

?We were almost up to our May level in the first two weeks in June,? he added.

Gary Franklin of Windermere Real Estate San Juan Island isn?t ready to say the market is out of the woods, but a recent surge in sales should not be discounted. Moreover, Franklin believes that prices may well have bottomed out and may begin to rise.

?So far we?ve seen fewer bank-owned properties than last year, less than 5 percent of the total in 2012,? he said. ?In 2011, it was closer to 10 percent for the year.?

The overall volume of sales this year, and the number of offers a particular home may draw, are encouraging signs as well, he said.

?We?re seeing a strengthening in prices, more multiple offers and the Seattle market is stronger too,? he said. ?That can be good for us in the islands.?

According to Northwest Multiple Listing Service, there were 31 pending sales in May 2012, compared to 13 in May 2011. A total of 18 homes or condos sold in May 2012, versus 12 in 2011.

Year to date, NMLS statistics show 66 home/condo sales in 2012 compared to 50 over the same mark a year ago. Prices have lagged behind, however, with 2001?s median mark, through May, hitting $420,000, compared to a 2012 year-to-date mark of $322,500.

Franklin said buyers looking to ?move up?, meaning into a bigger home, account for a good percentage of recent sales and that the sale of waterfront homes this year overshadows the last.

?All of last year we sold 13 waterfront homes,? he said. ?So far this year we?ve seen 12 sell through June 1.?

Franklin cautions those looking to sell a home should be patient. He said the average time a home remains on the market, or until a pending sale closes, is still about 325 days.

?There hasn?t been much change in that in 2012,? he said.

Still, Franklin and Bormann agree the market is on a rise and, after years of sluggish sales, may be hitting a stride.

?I think ?toe-hold would be a good description of where we?re at,? Franklin said.

Reflected infrared light unveils never-before-seen details of Renaissance paintings

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? When restoring damaged and faded works of art, artists often employ lasers and other sophisticated imaging techniques to study intricate details, analyze pigments, and search for subtle defects not visible to the naked eye. To refine what can be seen during the restoration process even further, a team of Italian researchers has developed a new imaging tool that can capture features not otherwise detectable with the naked eye or current imaging techniques.

The system, known as Thermal Quasi-Reflectography (TQR), is able to create revealing images using reflected light from the mid-infrared part of the spectrum (3-5 micrometers in wavelength). Researchers from the University of L'Aquila, the University of Verona, and Italy's National Institute of Optics in Florence successfully demonstrated the TQR system on two famous works of art: the Zavattari frescos in the Chapel of Theodelinda and "The Resurrection" by the Italian Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca. The researchers detail their work in a paper published June 18 in the Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Optics Express.

Thermography, the traditional infrared imaging technique in this part of the spectrum (greater than 3 micrometers) detects subtle temperature differences due to the pigmentation on the surface of paintings. These thermal maps can be used during art restoration to reveal internal defects that are not evident in visible light.

In contrast, the TQR imaging system uses a very different tactic and doesn't detect heat emitted from paintings at all; in fact it tries to minimize it: The TQR system shines a faint mid-infrared light source onto the surface of the painting and records the light that is reflected back to a camera.

"This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first time that this technique has been applied on artworks," said Dario Ambrosini of the University of L'Aquila in Italy, one of the paper's authors. "This novel method represents a powerful yet safe tool for artwork diagnostics." All objects emit some infrared radiation. Depending on their temperature, certain materials shine more brightly in one wavelength than in others. At normal room temperature (20? C or 68? F), paintings typically emit more energy in the longer infrared wavelengths (42 percent) than they do in the mid-infrared (1.1 percent).

To take advantage of this weak mid-IR emission, the researchers applied the basic tools of thermography and ran them in reverse. Since the painting would not normally shine brightly in the mid-IR, the researchers used under-powered halogen lamps as very simple yet effective sources of mid-IR radiation. To measure only the reflected light, special care had to be taken to prevent the lamp from heating the surface of the painting and to exclude all other potential sources of mid-IR radiation.

The researchers developed the TQR system to find a thermal imaging tool capable of better differentiating materials in a painted surface. The mid-infrared has advantages over other wavelengths in this regard. It also has better contrast and produces sharper images than studies in the far-infrared, and can detect features not seen in the near-infrared (NIR) with wavelength less than approximately 2 micrometers.

In its first test on a small section of the Zavattari frescos in the Chapel of Theodelinda, the TQR system revealed details that were missed by earlier optical and near-infrared studies. "Our system easily identified old restorations in which missed gold decorations were simply repainted," said lead author Claudia Daffara of the University of Verona. "The TQR system was also much better at visualizing armor on some of the subjects in the fresco."

To further evaluate the potential, the TQR system also studied a painting known as "The Resurrection" by Piero della Francesca. The TQR system identified interesting features, such as highly reflective retouches from previous restorations, all while operating during normal museum hours without interruption. The most surprising feature was an area around a soldier's sword that was painted by using two different fresco techniques. This subtle distinction was not detected by NIR photography.

"For mural paintings the use of the mid-infrared regions reveals crucial details," said Daffara. "This makes TQR a promising tool for the investigation of these artworks."

The researchers are currently conducting tests to determine if the TQR system can also provide infrared spectra of the surface of paintings, which may be able to identify the pigments used. "Determining the chemical makeup of the pigments is important in determining how best to protect and restore the artwork," said Ambrosini. And they note that TQR may have applications beyond art preservation. "In principle, it should work whenever we desire to differentiate surface materials," said Ambrosini.
