News Summary: German jobless rate up in July

JOBLESS RATE RISES: Unemployment in Germany rose to 6.8 percent in July as a typical seasonal increase was reinforced by a gradual slowing in the labor market in Europe's biggest economy .

THE DETAILS: The Federal Labor Agency data indicated Tuesday that the unadjusted jobless rate rose from 6.6 percent in June. The number of people registered as unemployed was up 67,000 compared with the previous month at 2.876 million, though it was 63,000 lower than in July last year.

THE OUTLOOK: Labor agency chief Frank-Juergen Weise blamed the increase largely on seasonal factors. Unemployment typically climbs during the summer break as those out of school register as jobless and temporary contracts expire. But he said there are "indications of a weaker development" on the so-far impressively buoyant labor market.

Deutsche Bank earns sag on crisis volatility

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? Deutsche Bank said earnings fell 46 percent in the second quarter as the eurozone debt crisis hurt investment banking activity and revenue from trading securities.

Germany's largest bank said Tuesday that income fell at its investment banking division as fewer client companies came to the bank for its services helping them issue shares.

It also said that revenue from trading debt securities ? one of the investment categories most affected by the crisis ? was down. The company said that was partly due to the company taking "deliberately lower levels of risk" due to subdued trading volumes.

Net earnings fell to ?661 million from ?1.233 billion in the same three months a year ago.

Revenues were down 6 percent to ?8.0 billion. A major hit to revenue came at the corporate banking and securities division, where share underwriting and debt trading are located, falling by ?451 million to ?3.5 billion.

The earnings statement Tuesday was the first reported under new co-CEOs Anshu Jain and Juergen Fitschen, who took over from Josef Ackermann in May.

"The European sovereign debt crisis continues to weigh on investor confidence and client activity across the bank," it said.

European governments such as Spain and Italy are struggling with high levels of debt, and the prospect they might default or need bailouts has unnerved markets.

The earnings release added detail to an early release of a few numbers last week.

Markets stay supported by ECB hopes

LONDON (AP) ? Hopes that Europe is readying some firm action to deal with its debt crisis continued to support sentiment in the markets Monday at the start of a week that could also see the Federal Reserve also enact further measures to boost the U.S. economy.

Stocks, as well as the euro and the bond prices of Spain and Italy, have been buoyant since last Thursday's comments from European Central Bank president Mario Draghi that the bank "is ready to do what it takes to preserve the euro. Believe me, it will be enough."

Those comments raised expectations that, at the very least, the ECB will ramp up its bond-buying program in the hope of keeping a lid on Spanish and Italian borrowing rates. The recent sharp rise in Spain's interest rates raised concerns that the 17-country eurozone hasn't the capacity to bail out its fourth-largest economy, and raised the specter of Italy needing financial help too.

In Europe, Germany's DAX rose 0.6 percent to 6,730 while the CAC-40 in France was 0.5 percent higher at 3,295. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.4 percent at 5,648.

The euro however gave up some of its recent gains, trading 0.4 percent lower at $1.2258.

Making sure that Spain and Italy can continue tapping financial markets for cash appears to be the priority of policymakers despite a warning from Germany's central bank, the Bundesbank, that the line between monetary and fiscal policy should not be blurred.

Both Spain and Italy have seen the pressure on their bonds ease since Draghi's comments. The yield on Spain's 10-year bonds in the markets has dropped significantly below the dangerous 7 percent level to around 6.60 percent, while Italy was able to raise around a bigger than expected ?5.5 billion ($6.77 billion) in a round of auctions Monday. Crucially, the yield on the 10-year bond fell to 5.96 percent from 6.19 percent the last time it was offered, a signal of improving investor appetite.

"The pressure will be on for the ECB to actually deliver," said Geoffrey Yu, an analyst at UBS.

For now, investors continue to think that something will be delivered.

Wall Street was also poised for a modest retrenchment at the open later ? both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures were 0.3 percent lower.

Most of the attention Monday will center on Europe, with U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner due to meet Draghi and Germany's finance minister to discuss the challenges facing Europe and the global economy.

The spotlight this week won't just be on Europe: Fed policymakers are also meeting this week and there are growing expectations that in light of waning economic growth, they may announce a new monetary stimulus. The Bank of England also holds its monthly rate-setting meeting.

"With the ECB meeting this week, and the Fed and Bank of England also having their regular get-togethers, there is plenty of scope for central bank-inspired excitement," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG Index.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average closed up 0.8 percent at 8,635.44 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 1.6 percent to 19,585.40. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 climbed 0.9 percent to 4,245.70 and South Korea's Kospi rose 0.8 percent to 1,843.79. China's Shanghai Composite fell 0.9 percent to 2,109.91.

In energy trading, benchmark crude for September delivery was down 10 cents at $90.03 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Poll shows most Americans favor Medicaid expansion

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Most Americans back the idea of extending health coverage to their low-income neighbors through the government's Medicaid program, unless it means higher costs for their own state, according to a new poll.

In a survey released on Tuesday by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation, 67 percent of respondents gave a favorable view of President Barack Obama's healthcare reform provision to "expand the existing Medicaid program to cover more low?income, uninsured adults."

Support for the idea, which would expand coverage to as many as 16 million uninsured Americans, broke sharply along partisan lines. Nearly nine out of 10 survey participants who said they were Democrats and two-thirds of independents backed the expansion. Six out of 10 Republican participants said they opposed it.

Support dropped to 49 percent when poll participants were asked whether they would like to see Medicaid expanded in their home states, and a slight majority of 52 percent preferred maintaining the status quo when pollsters suggested an expansion could cost their states more money.

The results of the poll of 1,227 adults, conducted in July, have a 3 percentage point margin of error.

Medicaid, which is jointly funded by the federal and state governments and overseen by Washington, currently covers only narrowly defined groups of poor people in most U.S. states, including parents and pregnant women.

Obama's healthcare law, which was upheld as constitutional last month by the U.S. Supreme Court, would expand Medicaid to cover people with incomes of up to 133 percent of the poverty line. Between 90 percent and 100 percent of the cost of expanded coverage would be borne by the federal government.

The high court ruling gave states the ability to opt out of the Medicaid expansion. Several Republican governors have since vowed to do just that while deriding the plan as a costly expansion of federal bureaucracy.

The governors insist that the expansion will mean higher costs for states and lead to higher taxes or reduced funding for other programs such as education.

Proponents of reform say the Medicaid expansion would ultimately save money for states, while also saving lives by providing access to healthcare for those who need it.

Loans To Corrupt Politician Disclosed - Bahamas News

Lord Ashcroft

LONDON, England ? The billionaire British peer Lord Ashcroft will have to publicly counter accusations that he made loans to a corrupt Turks and Caicos Islands politician after a High Court judge in London on Monday decided that he should have to reply to the allegations.

Mr Justice Eady?s decision is the latest development in a ?long and tortuous? legal battle between Ashcroft and the former owners of Britain?s Independent newspaper.

According to The Independent, Ashcroft is seeking damages in a libel action against Independent News and Media (INM), the paper?s former editor Roger Alton and reporter Stephen Foley, claiming he was libelled in two articles in November 2009.

On Monday, Mr Justice Eady decided that, as well as defending its claim on the grounds of responsible journalism in a matter of public interest, INM could also use the defences of fair comment and justification: that the story was truthful, The Independent reported.

Legal sources told The Independent that the decision would mean that Ashcroft would most probably be expected to undergo cross examination in court and produce private documents which have not previously been subject to public scrutiny.

?The next stage will be for a reply to be served (by Lord Ashcroft) and, in the light of that, disclosure of documents,? Mr Justice Eady said in his decision.

The original articles, which relate to the peer?s business dealings in the Turks and Caicos Islands, appeared three months after Britain imposed direct rule and removed its premier, Michael Misick, who was accused of benefiting from improper sales of Crown land and taking bribes from developers.

INM?s case at a recent Court of Appeal hearing was that Ashcroft knew companies he controlled were doing business with corrupt politicians but did nothing to stop it ? that he knowingly profited from ?a culture of immorality?, The Independent reported.

Mr Justice Eady said the case centred on two payments amounting to almost $10 million made to Misick as loans.

?The case against the claimant is that he authorised this arrangement without ever intending that there should be any repayment and the he did so knowing that Mr Misick was corrupt, with a view to obtaining influence and commercial benefits,? Mr Justice Eady said.

Ashcroft?s lawyers argued in a previous hearing that the paper?s allegations were so ?garbled and unclear? that it would be unfair to expect him to answer them. Mark Warby QC said they were so vague that they were impossible to refute.

But Mr Justice Eady said at a hearing on 20 July: ?I believe that it did finally emerge sufficiently clearly what the defendants intend to allege.?

Misick is currently a fugitive from justice and the subject of an Interpol ?Red Notice?.

ZURICH (Reuters) - Novartis said on Monday European regulators approved Afinitor to treat women with a certain type of breast cancer, following a panel backing in June.

The drug is the first in a class known as mTOR inhibitors to be approved for post-menopausal women with advanced hormone-receptor positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. American health regulators also backed the drug as a breast cancer treatment[ID:nL2E8IKD8B]

Afinitor, also known as everolimus, is designed to be given in combination with another drug, Aromasin, to treat women whose cancer has recurred or progressed after treatment with two other therapies. Aromasin is made by Pfizer Inc.

Novartis's drug - expected to become a major seller for the Swiss drugmaker - is already approved to treat patients with four other types of cancer, including kidney and a rare type of pancreatic cancer.

SEO Strategies - Optimize Online Press Releases For CRM - PDF

SEO Strategies - Optimize Online Press Releases For CRM

In a fiercely competitive online atmosphere, press releases can be a valuable resource for increasing
your company's overall visibility, but only if they're optimized effectively. Remember, this tactic is no
longer just about publicizing your latest news. Instead, it's about creating visibility through multiple
channels that allow you to connect through content, reaching those audience segments that are
relevant to your company and purpose.
When optimized correctly, online press releases can do all of the following:

* Boost Search Engine Rankings for SEO
* Drive Targeted Traffic
* Build Brand Awareness
* Save Money on Pay-Per-Click Campaigns
* Usurp Position From Competition on SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages)
Despite these numerous benefits, however, many companies continue to use unoptimized press
releases that don't work as well as they could. Instead, these lazy releases stagnate in Deleted
folders and are never indexed by the major search engines. Remember, this isn't a traditional press
release like Grandma used to write.
Unlike traditional press releases, which were succinct and written with readers in mind, online press
releases need to be more carefully crafted. An online press release (like SEO in general), is half art
and half science - in addition to appealing to readers, they need to be optimized for search engines in
order to drive results. A few simple modifications could increase their effectiveness drastically,
providing far more SEO benefit to your online presence than they would have otherwise.
So how do you write and optimize an online press release that will drive tangible results?
First and foremost, employ common sense and reason. No one wants to read something that isn't
newsworthy, and these type of releases won't garner any publicity. In fact, according to a DM News
survey, 98 percent of journalists are online every day, and almost 75 percent are searching for press
releases. So before you write anything, ask yourself if the story you're thinking about publicizing is
newsworthy. As a member of your industry, whatever that may be, would you take the time to read it?
If not, don't waste your time. Wait for a story that will make a splash and matter to your audience.
Next, identify the keywords your press release will utilize. Align them with the keywords and phrases
you're already optimizing in order to derive the highest SEO benefit. In order to make sure you're
choosing those with the most potential, start with some quick competitive analysis. This can be done
by performing a News search that includes your keyword on Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, or any other
popular search engine.
Looking at the results page, you'll know if this is the right keyword or phrase to chase? How? By the
amount of competition it presents. If you notice that most of the results are spread out over a longer
time span, this keyword is a good opportunity because there clearly isn't as much competition. On the
other hand, if your search turns up ten stories from the past few days, you'll know that this term is

much more competitive due to the many stories you're competing against.
Now that you're aware of the competitive landscape, determine the amount of flexibility you have to
work with. As I mentioned before, if you're attempting to enter a space that's crowded with recent
news, you'll need to focus on a single keyword phrase, while if you have more flexibility, you can
chase several permutations of your keywords.
In the end, it's a better idea to focus on specific online niches, crafting your press release in a way
that you know will appeal to your potential readers. Your press release will be much more potent if it
gets noticed within a specific sector than if it languishes away in relative obscurity, hidden somewhere
in a crowd of similar stories.
This simple research phase can make all the difference in whether your press release gets noticed,
but it's often the most overlooked aspect of this strategy. Don't get trapped milling around in the
virtual crowd - stand out and get noticed by optimizing around the keywords that hold the most
potential.
Once you've completed this critical research step, you will have identified the most potent keywords
with which to write your press release. Now you're finally ready to start writing!
Start with the headline, the most important part of your press release. Include your most competitive
keywords in this headline. While it may be tempting to simply combine all of your keywords, it's
imperative that your headline remains both condensed yet descriptive. Think like a journalist and a
searcher here. Stick to the basics, providing the essential facts and the who, what, where, when, and
why. All of the major search engines start by looking for keywords in headlines, so be sure to give
them what they're looking for in order to capitalize on relevancy. Observe these rules and you'll also
attract those all important human readers.
After you've crafted the headline, it's time to start writing the body of your press release. Begin by
isolating several related phrases to maximize your SEO potential. For example, if you're publicizing
the launch of your new SEO site, your headline may be something like Fusionbox Launches SEO
Microsite.
Don't fall victim to the constraints you'll encounter with the use of just one keyword or phrase. Instead,
use a web of related keyphrases to expand your reach. Alternate permutations like "Fusionbox
Launches Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Microsite," for example, will invariably broaden your
scope and influence. These various combinations allow your release to appear in News results for
these related phrases as well.
Try rotating various combinations of keywords in the body of the release as well to create more
diversity and cover more ground. For example:
"Fusionbox, a Denver SEO agency, recently lauched a new microsite devoted to search engine
optimization (SEO) strategies. The company, which specializes in search engine marketing (SEM),
web design, and web development, needed a unique platform to reach clients looking for optimization
solutions and showcase their SEO services."
Rather than using the same keyword phrase repetitively and sounding like a broken record (which
drives human readers away), this sentence sprinkles other keyword combinations that expand the

SEO value of the release without detracting from readability.
Be creative here. Don't try to overload on keywords or your release won't flow like good writing
should. A good rule of thumb is to write with an eye for your keywords, incorporating them into the
release when natural opportunities appear.
Once you've finished writing your release, read over it again and circle your keywords in red. Does it
sound natural or look like a finished New York Times word search? If so, take a step back and ensure
your work flows while maintaining general SEO copywriting best practices and a healthy keyword
density.
Next, look for instances of your keywords where you could include a backlink to your site. This will
allow you to build valuable incoming links to your site, which are a major determinant of search
engine positioning. Remember to use the full URL in your link if you can't employ anchor text, as this
will ensure your link is indexed and available to search engines and readers alike.
1
Finally, you've finished writing your optimized press release. Now you're ready to begin the
submission process. There are an infinite number of press release sites on the Internet, but some are
far superior to others. Before you go about submitting anywhere and everywhere, make sure the sites
you're submitting content to are crawled by the major search engines, or else you won't get any SEO
benefit from your release.
Many of the more popular distribution services are indexed by Google News, Yahoo News, and
others, but make sure by searching for related stories on these engines and noting where the top
results originate. This way, you'll get a better idea of which distribution channels specific search
engines favor.
Target these for your own release to ensure your content will be visible where it matters, especially as
Universal search [http://running-with-the-bulls-seo.blogspot.com/2007/09/blended-search-changes-
internet.html] rolls onto the scene, showing News links among the regular search results.
As you can see, optimizing your press release is a somewhat complex endeavor. Still, considering
that an optimized release is an essential ingredient to a search engine marketing (SEM) campaign for
its ability to boost search engine rankings, drive targeted traffic, build brand awareness, and even
help you gain digital real estate on the SERPs (search engine results page), the juice is definitely
worth the squeeze.
Just observe the best practices I've described above and you'll build your online presence in this
fiercely competitive online atmosphere where visibility is everything. An optimized press release will
allow you to connect with your target audience through content while deriving tangible SEO benefits.

Indonesia lowers power lines to deter train surfers

Indonesia has lowered overhead power cables on a busy train line into Jakarta to stop people travelling on carriage roofs, officials said Monday, in a move critics said was dangerous and irresponsible.

State-run rail operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia said it began lowering cables Friday by around one metre (three feet) on sections of the 59-kilometre (37-mile) route between Jakarta and Bogor city.

"This measure has proven to be very effective and cheap. Nobody dares to sit on the roof because they are afraid of being electrocuted," the company's security official Ahmad Sujadi told AFP.

Work on the rest of the line was due to be finished by August 10, he said.

Commuters hitching a free ride on carriage roofs is a big problem for the rail operator, which has tried several measures to deter the practice, especially during peak hours when carriages are crammed.

These have included spraying paint on roof surfers, installing poles that deliver a painful whack, stationing dogs on train roofs, and hanging boulders above the tracks to knock off "atapers", or "roofers" in the local slang.

The National Commission on Human Rights said the latest measure was not the right way to tackle the problem of fare dodgers.

"It is irresponsible of the operator to trap people in such a dangerous way," the commission's deputy chairman, Nur Kholis, told AFP.

"This is not the best solution to deter people from going on the roof. If the operator provides more carriages and improves the facilities it is unlikely people will go on the roof," he said.

Rights groups have criticised other measures used by the rail operator, saying they compromise public safety and discriminate against the poor, many of whom rely on the overcrowded trains to get to work.

Syrian troops reportedly pound Aleppo

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rebels gain four tanks and destroy the rest at the base, a commander says
  • Turkey: A Syrian brigadier general and 11 other officers defect to Turkey
  • Opposition: At least 12 people are killed Monday in Syria, including eight in Aleppo
  • France says it will call for a U.N. Security Council meeting to try to stop the bloodshed

Northern Syria (CNN) -- Rebels captured a government military base Monday on the outskirts of Aleppo, the hotly contested Syrian metropolis that has seen more than a week of bloody clashes.

The base had about 200 Syrian troops and appeared to be under attack by rebels from three sides overnight.

"The battle lasted around nine hours," said Fazad Abdel Nasr, a rebel commander working in the northern Aleppo suburbs. Nasr said six regime soldiers and four rebel fighters were killed.

The rebels also gained heavy equipment to supplement the lesser weapons they had been fighting with.

"We captured four tanks in good condition, and they are now in the hands of the Free Syrian Army. Two were destroyed," Nasr added.

Despite the boost for rebels, the relentless battle for Syria's largest city raged on Monday. Regime forces launched missiles and shelled from attack helicopters, opposition activists said.

Aleppo, Syria's commercial and cultural hub, has seen a mass exodus amid the violence. About 200,000 people in and around Aleppo have fled shelling and heavy weapon fire in the past two days, Valerie Amos, the U.N.'s under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, said Sunday.

Conflicting reports emerged Monday on who controlled the major Aleppo neighborhood of Salahuddin, which rebels had claimed days earlier. Both opposition fighters and the regime said Monday they had taken over Salahuddin.

With no end to the country's 16-month crisis in sight, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said his country will take more action to try to stop the bloodshed.

"As France is taking over the presidency of the U.N. Security Council on August 1, we are going to ask -- before the end of the week -- for a meeting of the Security Council, probably at a ministerial level ... to try and stop the massacres and prepare for the political transition," Fabius told French RTL radio on Monday.

Also on Monday, a Syrian brigadier general -- who is also a deputy police chief of Latakia -- defected to Turkey, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said. Another 11 Syrian officers also defected overnight, the ministry said. The total number of Syrians who have fled to Turkey has reached 43,500.

Meanwhile, fighting words continued between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime and opponents near and far.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem gave ominous words Sunday about the battle for Aleppo, vowing that rebels would not gain control of the city.

"Since last week, (opposition fighters) planned for whatever they called the 'great Damascus battle,' but they have failed after one week," Moallem saidin referring to a rebel offensive beaten back earlier this month. "That's why they moved to Aleppo, and I can assure you that they will fail."

He made his comments during a trip to Iran, one of his nation's few remaining allies.

But U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta predicted Sunday that the Syrian regime's violent crackdown in Aleppo will prove "a nail in Assad's coffin" by turning even more people against al-Assad and his government.

A mortar shell falls toward the Syrian village of Jbatha Al-khashab, about 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of Damascus. It's seen from the Israeli side of the border, in the Golan Heights. A Free Syrian Army soldier rips a portrait of President Bashar al-Assad at the Bab Al-Salam border crossing to Turkey on Sunday. Dozens of Turkish truck drivers on Saturday, July 21, accused Free Syrian Army rebels of having burned and looted their lorries as they captured Syria's Bab al-Hawa post, near Aleppo, from government troops.

Nabil Elaraby, the head of the Arab League said Sunday that the league believes war crimes are being committed in the city.

Blog: A bloody mess could get messier

At least 114 people were killed across Syria on Sunday, according to the opposition Local Coordination Committees of Syria; 11 of the dead were from Aleppo.

Elsewhere, 41 people were killed in Damascus and its suburbs, including 18 people whose bodies found charred on farms in Moadamiyeh, the LCC said.

Syrian TV reported that "terrorists" suffered heavy losses after clashes in three Aleppo neighborhoods.

With reports of incessant attacks rocking Aleppo, the head of a prominent Syrian opposition group pleaded for world allies to help arm rebels.

"Our friends and allies will bear responsibility for the terrifying massacres that will happen in Aleppo if they don't move soon," Abdulbaset Sieda, head of the Syrian National Council, said Saturday.

Read more: Syria rebels appear more capable, yet still outgunned

He urged allies to act outside of the U.N. Security Council, as resolutions there can be vetoed.

"The rebels now are fighting with primitive types of weapons against the killing machine," Sieda said. "We need weapons that will allow us to stop tanks and planes."

Iran's foreign minister, meanwhile, accused Israel of being behind "a conspiracy against Syria" and gave a warning to the international community.

"It is completely ridiculous and delusive to believe that there is a possibility of creating a vacuum in the leadership in Syria," Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said. "We call upon the people of the region to be fully aware and not to move in the wrong direction, because there will be severe consequences that will go beyond the borders of the region to the outside world."

The Syrian crisis started in March 2011, after al-Assad's regime violently cracked down on peaceful protests seeking his ouster. The Assad family has ruled Syria for more than four decades.

More than 20,000 people, mostly civilians, have died in the conflict, the LCC said. Last week, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said almost 17,000 people have died.

The Baltimore Snacker: Snacking State-by-State: South Dakota II - If ...

South Dakota is one of the few states with its own official state dessert, cake. ?Or should I say?kuchen, which?is German for "cake". ?With its large German American population, South Dakota's specifically German cake should be of little surprise as an official dessert.

Official Name:?State of South Dakota
State Nickname:?The Mount Rushmore State
Admission to the US:?November 2, 1889 (#40)
Capital:?Pierre (8th largest)
Other Important Cities:?Sioux Falls (largest), Rapid City (2nd largest), Aberdeen (3rd largest)
Region:?Midwest, Great Plains; West North Central (US Census)
RAFT Nations:?Bison;?Pinyon Nut
Bordered by:?North Dakota (north), Minnesota (east), Nebraska (south), Wyoming & Montana (west)
Official State Foods and Edible Things:?fry bread (bread), honey bee (insect, for the honey), kuchen (dessert), milk (drink), ring-necked pheasant (bird), walleye (fish), Western wheat grass (grass, though I imagine few people drink the wheat grass concoctions popular with health nuts elsewhere in the country),
Some Famous and Typical Foods:?Native American foods, especially those of the Great Plains (wojapi,?fry bread, Bannock bread, and so on, as well as traditional foods such as?pemmican and?wahuwapa wasna); German and Eastern European foods, including?kuchen?& chislic?

South Dakota officially made?kuchen?the official state dessert in 2000, after a hard fought (okay, maybe not?that?hard, but quite delicious)?struggle the previous legislative session. ?In his article "Cookin' Kuchen", Trevor Guthmiller - as referenced by the North Dakota State University Library's "Germans from Russia Heritage Collection" - points out that?kuchen?was an important part of South Dakota culture long before that.
German immigrants brought kuchen to South Dakota in the 1880s. Homesteaders often brought very little with them besides their clothes, basic tools, self- sufficiency and a determination to face the challenges that a rough and unsettled South Dakota threw at them...Many came directly from Germany, others most recently from Russia. Their hard work and agricultural prowess turned McPherson County [where many settled] into one of the largest wheat- producing areas in the country...?
To understand why kuchen is such a staple in McPherson County, you must understand the heritage of the people who live there. In 1990, 2,758 residents [the single largest ethnic group in the county] listed their primary ancestry as German... Eureka holds a Schmeckfest every fall, and Leola celebrates Rhubarb Day every other July, and kuchen is prominently featured in those events. There aren?t many lutefisk feeds in this part of the state; it?s a kuchen- eatin? crowd if there ever was one. [Guthmiller 2004]
There are many different varieties of?kuchen: those based on fruits, on cottage cheese, on cream cheese, on a streussel-type filling, and so on. ?So it must have been a difficult choice to pick one to be the state's official dessert. ?The one that was put in place: the apple and cream cheese?kuchen. ?The South Dakota state government [South Dakota Secretary of State Office 2007: 14] even prints the complete "official state recipe" in a government publication. ?Good luck getting them to do that in Annapolis for Smith Island cake.

The recipe I interpret below is the official?kuchen?recipe of the state of South Dakota, on page 14 of the?2007 South Dakota Legislative Manual. ?Since this?is?a government publication,?I could copy and quote the recipe word for word, but you can look it up yourself.

The Recipe: Kuchen

For the official South Dakota?kuchen?recipe assemble the following:

For the crust, you will need:

* regular flour (have it)
* sugar (same)
* salt (yup, have that, too)
* vanilla (got it)
* butter (this I would have had, were it not for that wretched?derecho?that knocked out power in my neighborhood - and many neighborhoods throughout the Mid-Atlantic - for at least five whole days. ?Another $2 for some new butter. ?This?should?be cold but it worked fine at room temperature for me),

For the cream cheese filling that goes on top of the crust, you will need:

* more vanilla and sugar
*?cream cheese (a pound, or two blocks, each about $2 at Harris Teeter)
* an egg (at room temperature - this also had to be replaced thanks to that damn storm)

And for the apple topping, you will also need

* still?more?sugar
* cinnamon (had it)
* and, of course, apples (I got three Granny Smiths for about $2 total)

Mix together the dry ingredients for your crust. ?Use a mixer or just a spoon.
Cut in the butter and add the vanilla.
And press the dough into a lightly greased 9" x 13" pan. ?Put in a preheated 450?F oven for about 15 minutes. ?When done, take out and cool it down, also reducing your oven to 400?F.
While the crust is baking, peel, core and thinly slice your apples and set aside.
Mix together your filling ingredients, apart from the egg, again with a mixer or a spoon.
Add the egg...
...and mix thoroughly.

Pour the filling over the baked crust and spread out evenly.
Next, mix together your sugar and cinnamon.
Arrange the apple slices over the filling as tightly as possible. ?Although I cut up three apples, I could barely fit half of the slices on top.

?Cover with the cinnamon and sugar, and bake for 20 minutes.

With as many components as this recipe has, it is easier than it seems. ?It's best served cold I find, and easier to cut for that matter. ?The apples are still a little crunchy and the cream cheese is a nice, sweet complement to them. ?Now just imagine all the?other?recipes for?kuchen?I could have done!

- - - - -

Now we're done with South Dakota, and it's time to head southward to the home of of bluegrass, Memphis BBQ and the one and only Miss Dolly Parton! ?We are ringing the bell(e)s of Tennessee next week!

Gautam Ghosh Completes A Decade Of Blogging | Business 2 ...

Gautam GhoshProlific Indian blogger and a social media evangelist, Gautam Ghosh has recently completed ten glorious years of a blogging career. We bring you his thoughts on this remarkable achievement.

I have known Gautam Ghosh for a year now via his blog, following his social presence and listening to his thoughts at various social media events. He is undoubtedly one of India?s most prolific bloggers and a thought leader in the space of social media and human resource. Gautam has been included as the Top 100 influencers in HR, Top 25 HR blogs worldwide, etc.

Recently Gautam added another feather to his cap after being interviewed by Forbes. Shel Israel who wrote the story, tagged Gautam as the ?Social Media Thought Leader from India.? Shel further writes in his article that,

?Gautam is not even the best-known member of a new category of Digital Age human resource professionals known as social recruiters. But in my view, Ghosh is well-cast as a thought leader. He has been at the leading edge in two important social media trends: [1] human resources and [2] Indian business adoption. In both cases, he became an early practitioner when they were crawling at a snail?s pace and has remained at the front as both rapidly grow and head toward the mainstream.?

I strongly abide to what Shel had to say. Gautam?s blog that has been alive for last 10 years, is one of the reasons for his growing popularity in the Indian HR community. So I wasn?t surprised when Brave New Talent appointed him as the Product and Marketing Head last year.

Today his blog is referred to as a source of rich knowledge not only in India but internationally as well. The blog was featured as a case study in the book Business Blogs: A Practical Guide and has 2500+ subscribers which includes CXOs, HR heads, etc.

?I was attending a small HR gathering in 2006 and it was amazing ? the number of people there who said they read my blog. I never realized until then that reading blogs was ?mainstream,? and there are 2500+ people who have opted to get it via email. I didn?t realize until recently that the vast majority of my ?readers? don?t read my blog on the site or by a feed reader. They read it when a colleague forwards my email. And these are CXOs and HR heads of firms.?

That isn?t a small feat but the journey of ?Talent and Social Business? goes back to the early days of egroups before it went on to become one of the influential blogs of India.

?I used to run two egroups (egroups was later acquired by Yahoo and is now Yahoogroups) on professional topics like Knowledge Management and HR. I had also joined many existing egroups on these subjects. One day I came across a post where someone mentioned that blogging could be a ?Personal Knowledge Management? tool. And that?s how I opened my account on Blogger.com. It became a tool to connect with people across the world who shared my interests and ideas and also to debate about it.?

The beauty of a blog is that you can reach out to a set of people across countries. But it?s easier said than done. And Gautam had to wait till 2004 to taste the success of his popularity.

?It was in 2004, when the first Indibloggies were held. My blog was voted 3rd best Indiblog that year and that was a huge thing for me. The winner I think was India Uncut by Amit Varma and therefore a niche blog on HR and KM being 3rd was a great feeling for me :) .?

To run a blog during 04-05 and then being voted in top three blogs is a remarkable achievement. One of the main reason being Gautam that writes with a purpose and for an audience. Writing for a niche is challenging but will make you stand out if you keep on producing interesting content. And that?s what Gautam has been doing for the last 10 years on his blog.

But a decade is not a small time in a world where technology is changing with every sunrise. Today some of the pundits think that blogging is dead and it has been over shadowed by the social networks. As per a survey done by Drizzlin on the state of Indian blogosphere, blogging is far from dead and is only evolving with time.

Gautam shares that in the early days i.e. 2004-2005, the blogging world was small and passionate discussions would happen over blog comments. But with the proliferation of social networks, the platform of discussions have changed along with the number of blogs.

?Now the blogs are much more but the conversations have moved on to Twitter. Earlier the focus was on politics and movies. Now the focus on monetization is much more. What is also interesting is that I miss the bloggers who kind of abandoned blogging and haven?t made the transition to Twitter. What is great is the way many bloggers have grown ? becoming authors and being invited by mainstream media for their views. It shows their passions in their areas ? and dispels the notion of blogging as an online journal.?

One doesn?t need to dig deep to find the value of blogging as Gautam himself is a brilliant example. But I have always felt that blogging in India has been looked upon as an extra source of income.

?I don?t think blogging will generate money from day one. There has to be great body of content and a dedicated readership before one can think of monetization. Blogging is like planting a tree. You have to nurture and take care and grow a tree ? only later can you expect fruits.?

I think most of the bloggers start with enthusiasm but fizz out after some months since either they have not clearly defined what they are sharing with their readers or not providing value to readers. But if you survive by the same passion then Gautam has a few words of advice (though he modestly says that it is tough to give it)

?Automatic traffic should not be expected. Blogging can feel lonely in the beginning ? and why many people give it up. They think people are not reading and give up. The harsh truth is that they will not read it if you don?t add your own perspective and ?voice? to your blogging. One has to have a ?point of view? that adds value to the reader.?

CSN: Dodgers-Giants pennant race really on now

? ? ?
BOX SCORE

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sometimes there?s no reason to dress up a beating. Sometimes there?s really nothing much to say.

Thus it was with a spirit of blindest optimism that Bruce Bochy entered the interview room Saturday and heard no questions.

?I agree,? he said. ?Not much to say.?

Then someone had to ruin his mood and ask something. Like any answer matters when you get 10-loved by the Dodgers in front of the home customers.

[RECAP: Baggs' Instant Replay -- Dodgers 10, Giants 0]

Of course, they probably had this coming after shutting the Dodgers out for an entire home stand a month ago. That isn?t supposed to happen in big-kids ball, either.

But now it is clear that we have a chance for the pennant race we would all pay big cash to see -- the one with no participation medal. Just death or glory. As it should be.

Returning to the moment, though, those Dodgers were running on fumes. These are running on a rebuilt engine. Matt Kemp is back. So is Mark Ellis, and Hanley Ramirez has been rescued from the arsonist?s flames in Miami. And they may not be done trading futures for presents, either.

In other words, the race that has been on and off is on again. And it helps the Dodgers that they are cresting again as the Giants are flattening out.

They are without Pablo Sandoval, disabled after his hamstring decided to roll up his leg like one of those old cartoon window shades. They just picked up Marco Scutaro to take his spot and become the third baseman until such time as he can become the utility fill-in. There are three days . . . well, less than that, even . . . until the trade deadline. The Giants? essential depth issues are rising yet again.

And they have 62 games to go. In other words, the race really is on now.

As with all trams not already dead, buried and issuing up its belongings to the highest bidder, the Giants are going to have these patches of rancidity. Chad Billingsley, who spent most of the season trying to relocate his essential Billingsley-tude, smothered the Giants on four hits, driving their at-bats into ground balls and limiting their few scoring chances ? leadoff doubles by Buster Posey and Angel Pagan, and a bases-loaded situation in the ninth ? to exactly what they got in their last weekend here.

Nothing.

And now the intermittent euphoria of late June and early July has settled again, because that is the nature of most pennant races. Two teams who need full participation to play well have exchanged injuries, and the Dodgers and Giants of a month ago have swapped positions.

In other words, even if Clayton Kershaw stomps on Ryan Vogelsong as he has Tim Lincecum in the past and the Dodgers sweep the Giants, all that will do is tell the audience what it already suspected. That these two teams will most likely be unable to separate from each other until the final week, perhaps even the final series.

Three games in Los Angeles, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, October 1, 2 and 3. And the only way it could be grander is if the two wild card spots had already been nailed down by, say, Pittsburgh and Atlanta. That way, there would be no consolation prize, no fallback position, no side door out of ignominy. If we get what we want (as opposed to what we deserve), the series would be for death or glory, the way the creator intended.

I mean, if the creator is on the job the way he or she should be. The creator isn?t a wild card fan, you see. Likes expanded replay, but not the wild card.

Send Out Cards Review The Best Selling Business | Internet and ...

When I first started I really loved the service.

I recognised the value of sending out Cards to clients, and prospects, so SendOutCards made sense to me to help me in helping my telecommunication business for follow ups, as well sending cards and gifts for personal use. I saw Send Out Cards as a viable secondary revenue, and I imagine the thing I appreciate the most, is that you can make nice earnings WHILE using the service to help show better consumer appreciation , as well as build more sound relationships personally and professionally.

What PRECISELY is Send Out Cards :

The service Send Out Cards is a Multi Level Marketing Home Based Business Opportunity started in 2004 by Kody Bateman. Send Out Cards has grossed over $150 Million in the last 5 yrs, The idea of the company is that nobody ever essentially mails out real printed greeting cards anymore (when was the last time you received a greeting card in the mail) so there is an obvious market for the service (The Greeting Card and Presenting Industry is over $100 Bill a year). Everyone knows that trying to STAND OUT in the gang of marketers is a key to our achievement in any business, and this is exactly what SendOutCards does for over a 100,000 companies and indivuals throughout the world. Send Out Cards is a network marketing business and internet-based service that lets folks create customised greeting cards online the company then prints and mails on their behalf. Cards can be designed with your own photographs, artwork and messages, making them truly private and unique. You can also type in your own writing, add your digitized signature within, which is awfully cool!

Send Out Cards also offers gifts for a wide variety of occasions that can be sent along with a card. For people who like to send cards, Send Out Cards makes it actually convenient, affordable and fun to send just the right card for the occasion. People that are interested in using the Send Out Cards service can subscribe thru a Send Out Cards distributor. There are usage packages available beginning at under $10 every month, or purchase the wholesale package which permits the lowest possible pricing for sending greetings cards and gifts regularly. The standard pricing at wholesale for a greeting card is 62 Cents, and retail is 98 Cents compared to $4-5 for a similar card at Hallmark or American Greetings.

Can You Earn Cash With Send Out Cards?

As with any legitimate home run enterprise, there are folks making a really nice living as independent distributors with SendOutCards. Additionally , as is typical with the Multi Level Marketing industry in general, there are many distributors who are making nothing. Is this the fault of the business or the distributor? Both, in my opinion. Most small businesses don't help their distributors with promoting. If they do, it?s the old-school friends and family technique, though that's still a good way to build. It?s also the distributor?s fault because the majority are just not entrepreneurial, and even though they join the business with high hopes, they never really intend on putting in any effort to grow their business. In order to be successful.

Ira Feuerstein is an Arizona-based SEO and online business marketing consultant. His entrepreneurial spirit tied along with his deep experience of internet business opportunities makes him a good partner for those wishing to cultivate a significant online residual income business. A Send Out Cards Review is necessary for those deciding to join the team.

Netflix Class Action Lawsuit over Privacy Settled ... - The Internet Patrol

A settlement over the class action lawsuit against Netflix for privacy issues, which included retaining personally identifiable data with respect to customer video renting and viewing habits, has been reached, and if you are a current or former Netflix subscriber, you may have received an email notice of the class action settlement. The email, sent from ?Online DVD Class Action Administrator? has a subject of ?Video Privacy Lawsuit ? Current and Former Netflix Subscribers?, and goes on to tell you what your rights are with respect to the settlement, which settlement includes Netflix ?decoupling? your video rental and viewing data from your personal information. It also advises you that you have to opt out of the settlement in order to retain any rights you may have to sue Netflix directly over the privacy violation.

It all stems from Netflix? practice of retaining both credit card and video renting and viewing habits of their customers, even a year or more after the customer has cancelled their service. While retaining aggregate rental and viewing data - not connected to a specific customer - is in keeping with current Internet business practices, it?s not cool to keep it coupled with personally identifying information of former customers. That is why part of the settlement involves Netflix ?decoupling? the data.

And, it?s never cool to keep your customers? credit card information once they are no longer your customers.

Of course, all that said, there is nothing in it for the average Netflix user (i.e., most members of the ?class? in the class action - including you, unless you are a ?named plaintiff?). What you get is the comfort of knowing that Netflix is no longer allowed to associate your viewing and rental data with you - at least, once you are no longer a Netflix customer.

If You Are a Current or Former Netflix Subscriber
A Class Action Settlement Could Affect You

Para una notificaci?n en Espa?ol, llamar 1-866-898-5088 o visitar www.VideoPrivacyClass.com

Our records show that you were a current or former Netflix subscriber as of July 5, 2012. We are emailing to tell you about a Settlement that may affect your legal rights. Please read this email carefully. Go to www.VideoPrivacyClass.com for more information.

A Settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit that claims Netflix unlawfully kept and disclosed information, including records on the movies and TV shows its customers viewed. Netflix denies that it has done anything wrong.

What does the Settlement provide?

Netflix has agreed to change its data retention practices so that it separates (known as ?decoupling?) Entertainment Content Viewing History (that is, movies and TV shows that someone watched) from identification information for those subscribers who have not been a Netflix subscriber for at least 365 days, with some exceptions.

In addition, Netflix will pay $9 million into a Settlement Fund to:
? Make donations to Court-approved not-for-profit organizations, institutions, or programs.
? Pay notice and settlement administration expenses.
? Pay attorneys? fees of up to 25% or $2.25 million of the Settlement Fund, plus up to $25,000 in expenses.
? Pay a total incentive award of $30,000 to the Named Plaintiffs.

Proposals from potential donation recipients will be sought, and, after consideration, recommendations will be made to the Court. A list of the proposed donation recipients will be posted on the website.

Your Options

If you do nothing, you will remain in the Settlement and your rights will be affected. If you do not want to be included, you must exclude yourself by November 14, 2012. If you exclude yourself you will keep your right to sue Netflix about the claims in this lawsuit. If you remain in the Settlement, you can object to it by November 14, 2012.

The Court will hold a hearing on December 5, 2012 to consider any objections, whether to approve the Settlement, award attorneys? fees, and incentive award. You can appear at the hearing, but you don?t have to. You can hire your own attorney, at your own expense, to appear or speak for you at the hearing.

APNewsBreak: Irish slam Google data deceit

LONDON (AP) ? An Irish data protection officer says that Google's retention of Street View data in violation of agreements made with European governments is "clearly unacceptable."

The Mountain View, California-based company angered regulators in several countries in 2010 when it acknowledged that its mapping cars, which carried cameras across the globe to create three-dimensional maps of the world's streets, had also scooped up passwords and other data being transmitted over unsecured wireless networks.

Google was supposed to have deleted the data, but it acknowledged Friday that it had retained some of it.

Ireland's Deputy Information Commissioner Gary Davis says his organization had conveyed its "deep unhappiness" to Google and wants answers by Wednesday.

How Obama 'beat' Romney to Israel ... with a White House signing ceremony

The Romney and Obama campaigns both say their guy is the better friend of Israel, which may explain the White House signing of a security cooperation act just before Romney visits.

Governor Romney will sit down with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders on Sunday, as part of his efforts to juxtapose his own high regard for Israel with what he says has been Mr. Obama?s ?shabby treatment? of America?s closest Middle East ally.

Romney?s objective: to cut into the whopping 78 percent of the Jewish vote that Mr. Obama won in 2008, while firming up his own luke-warm support among some evangelical Christians who have questioned his passion for Israel.

But by highlighting his administration?s commitment to Israel?s security only hours before Romney arrives in Jerusalem, Obama is signaling that he plans to cede no ground when it comes to Israel and the debate over how his administration has treated it.

What the battle suggests is that, among foreign policy issues, Israel is an emotion-laden topic that both campaigns believe they can turn to their advantage ? and that means this week?s tit-for-tat over Israel is likely to be only the beginning.

Both Obama and Romney speak of America?s unshakable friendship with Israel: Obama claiming that no president has done more for Israel?s security than he has, Romney insisting the president has downgraded the two nations? close links, in particular by not visiting Israel once during his three-plus years in office.

But the one-upmanship over Israel has heated up recently among campaign surrogates ? in part because Romney, who on Wednesday commenced a seven-day international trip, committed to silencing his criticisms of the president while overseas.

After Vice President Joe Biden said this week that Obama ?has done more for Israel?s security than any president since Harry Truman,? former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton called Mr. Biden?s statement ?ridiculous? ? and offered his own superlative.

?This is the most hostile president since the state of Israel was created,? Ambassador Bolton said on Fox News.

The sparring over Israel ? and the administration?s record on it ? spilled over into a foreign policy ?discussion? the Brookings Institution held in Washington on Wednesday with representatives of the two campaigns.

Rich Williamson, a senior Romney foreign policy and defense adviser who served in the George W. Bush administration, skirted the evidence of Obama?s security commitment to Israel by zeroing in on what he called a lack of close ties, saying ?political cooperation has not existed.?
