Latest Technology in Computer Hardware | Renjivedas Ocean of ...

http://neeraj-nair.blogspot.in/2010/07/latest-technology-in-computer-hardware.html

The rate at which new computer hardware products are arriving in the market is simply mind-boggling. As the technology advances, the size and the price of the devices come down, while the efficiency and capacity increase. The scenario is same in all cases, whether it is about internal components like processor, motherboard, RAM, graphics card, and hard disk or for peripheral accessories like mouse, keyboard, and monitors. Personal computers became popular only before about three decades back. But already there are huge piles of outdated and antique hardware components and devices. This is a tribute to the tremendous rate of development of latest technologies in computer hardware field. Perhaps, the newest entrant into the archeological catalogue of computer peripherals is CRT monitors. The sleek looking LCD monitors are spreading like computer virus.

Data storage devices have attracted considerable attention of the technology developers. New kinds of storage devices such as newer versions of flash memory cards, hard disks using latest technology and disks of ever-increasing capacity are the results of advancement in latest technology in compute hardware. The memory size of the random access memory (RAM) cards is soaring to enable the smooth functioning of graphics animation software packages and streaming video websites. Also, computer motherboards have undergone substantial changes over the years. More and more functions are being added to the motherboard. Also, despite the incredible improvement in performance and functionalities, the price of these components has actually fallen steadily.

The most vital component of a computer is the microprocessor. It is in this field that a battle of developing latest technologies in computer hardware takes place. The pace of development of microprocessor increases as the competition between the major processor chip manufacturing companies, Intel and AMD, intensifies. Both the companies are engaging in a neck and neck competition and continuously outdo each other in introducing new technologies.

In the field of computer peripherals, the latest technology in computer hardware is in developing yet another version of wireless mouse and keyboard. The concept of wireless mouse and keyboard is about a decade old. But the development of these items is still a work in progress. The latest products of wireless mouse and keyboard are said to be highly durable and error free.

Some of the developments in the latest technology in computer hardware are gearing up for changing the present concept of desktop and laptop computers. With new developments making possible the convergence of mobile phone technology and computers, a new breed of fully functional palm-top computers are going to be introduced in near future. With touch screen monitors and without the need for a mouse, these gadgets are likely to become the next big leap in the constantly leaping technological development field.

Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G review: T-Mobile's QWERTY slider falls flat

DNP Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G review TMobile's QWERTY slider falls flat

We first heard rumblings about the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze Q slider back in August, and what stood out most -- apart from the rumored Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and HSPA+42 connectivity -- was that long-winded moniker. Interesting, then, that Sammy should re-brand the T-Mobile device with a name that does nothing to clarify this handset's identity: the Galaxy S Relay 4G. That jumble of words aside, this phone offers a five-row QWERTY layout, a dual-core S4 chip and a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, all for the moderate price of $150 (with a $50 mail-in rebate). Is this slider the best T-Mobile has to offer? Join us past the break as we give the Relay the full run-through.

Bradley-Mickelson give US 1st point at Ryder Cup

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? The Americans made a statement with the first point at the Ryder Cup.

Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson won 4-and-3 Friday morning, handing Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald their first loss ever in foursomes. The Europeans had been 4-0 together, and Garcia was 8-0-1 in alternate-shot play at the Ryder Cup.

Bradley, a Ryder Cup rookie, was unshakable, making one big putt after another. None was bigger than the last, and he drained a 15-footer on No. 15 to clinch the match. While his caddie twirled the flag stick, Bradley screamed and pumped his fist, then exchanged a hand slap and a hug with Mickelson.

Donald needed to hole out from the bunker to extend the match, but it wasn't close.

President Emeritus John R. Silber Dead at 86 | BU Today | Boston ...

John R. Silber (Hon.?95), the president emeritus and former chancellor who led the transformation of Boston University from a commuter school to a renowned research institution, died early this morning, Thursday, September 27, at age 86. The cause of death was kidney failure.

Silber, who came to Boston University in 1971, was the University?s seventh president, and served for more than three decades, as president until 1996, then as University chancellor from 1996 to 2003. He also was a College of Arts & Sciences professor of philosophy and of international relations, a University Professor, and a School of Law professor of law.

Silber was strong-willed, outspoken, and often controversial, and his resolute work ethic, formidable capacity for knowledge, and dogged determination to improve both BU and the city of Boston made him well known in academic as well as political circles. During his tenure at BU?which coincided, for a time, with his unsuccessful 1990 run for governor of Massachusetts?he greatly expanded the campus, recruited top-notch faculty, including two future Nobel Prize winners, and established the University?s long-running partnership with the Chelsea Public School system, which began in 1988 and continued for 20 years. The University he served for so long awarded him an honorary degree at the 1995 Commencement.

?In the seven years I have served this wonderful institution, I have come to appreciate the magnitude of what John Silber accomplished at Boston University,? says University President Robert A. Brown. ?He worked tirelessly to transform the University, introducing ever higher standards in the hiring and promotion of faculty and admission of students. There were some who found fault with his candor, and those who disagreed with him on some policy or decision, but nobody can deny John?s legacy. He was famously outspoken and unhesitant in decision-making. He left an indelible imprint on Boston University and set the foundation for the course to greatness that we are steering today. We owe John a tremendous debt of gratitude.?

While his tendency toward blunt speech earned him moments of local and national attention, most memorably during his gubernatorial campaign, his friends and supporters praised him for choosing truth over tact. ?I called him the last candid man,? author Tom Wolfe (Hon.?00) said. ?There aren?t many left who say what they mean, and mean what they say.?

John R. Silber, Boston University President emeritus and chancellor

Silber was born in San Antonio, Tex., to Jewell Silber, a schoolteacher, and Paul Silber, an architect who immigrated to the United States from Berlin in 1902. He described his parents as ?strict but loving? people who ?gave no excuses.? In 1989, he told the Boston Globe about his realization at age four that his right arm, shortened by a congenital birth defect, would never grow. ?My mother always fixed my sleeves so I would have use of my arm,? he said. ?She never hid it. Neither have I. By not pampering me, they let me develop into the person that I am.?

He attended Trinity University in San Antonio, where he met his wife, Kathryn (Hon.?01), and graduated with a degree in philosophy. He earned a master?s degree in 1952 and a doctorate in 1956 from Yale, both in philosophy, then returned to his home state to teach philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. He was named chair of the philosophy department in 1962, and the dean of UT?s College of Arts and Sciences in 1967, but a clash with the chairman of the university?s board of regents over a plan to split the college into smaller schools led to his dismissal in July 1970. His principled stand, however, won the attention of the BU presidential search committee, then entering the ninth month of looking for a new leader.

When Silber arrived the following year, the school bore little resemblance to the BU of today. The campus had only 66 education and research buildings and 42 residence halls, the library had less than a million books, and most critically, the University was operating at a budget deficit of $8.8 million.

?When I came here, we didn?t have a list of our alumni,? Silber told the University?s weekly newspaper, the BU Bridge, in 2002. ?We didn?t have a balanced budget. We didn?t have a computerized payroll system. We were raising only about $2.5 million a year. Back then, running Boston University was like trying to fly a 747 without avionics, without an instrument panel.?

Silber took an ambitious tack, balancing the University?s budget in 18 months, and then launching an aggressive campaign to hire new faculty, first in the humanities and social sciences, then in the life sciences. Elie Wiesel (Hon.?74), the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities, was recruited in 1976, and Derek Walcott, a College of Arts & Sciences professor emeritus of creative writing, in 1982?both went on to win Nobel Prizes, Wiesel?s in peace, and Walcott?s in literature. At Silber?s behest, two other Nobel laureates joined the faculty, the late Saul Bellow (Hon.?04), a University Professor and a CAS professor, in 1993, and Sheldon Glashow, the Arthur G. B. Metcalf Professor of Mathematics and Science, in 2000.

Over the next 25 years, BU experienced a period of unprecedented growth and engagement with the city of Boston. New programs and institutes served a range of constituencies?with the founding of the Prison Education Program in 1972, Metropolitan College offered courses for prisoners in state correctional facilities, while the University Professors Program allowed advanced undergraduates to plan their own curricula. The physical plant improved dramatically as well, doubling in size with the addition of facilities such as the Metcalf Center for Science and Engineering, in 1983, the Rafik B. Hariri Building for the School of Management, in 1996, and the Boston University Photonics Center, which opened in 1997.

John R. Silber and Family

The Silber family, 1971.

Under Silber?s leadership, BU also forged deeper ties with the community, most notably by taking the unprecedented step of managing a failing Boston-area school system. The Boston University/Chelsea Partnership, established in 1988, brought new facilities, curriculum changes, and new policies for students, teachers, and administrators into a troubled system, with the goal of making Chelsea?s school?s ?a model for excellence in urban education.? The partnership, which provided the district with tutoring programs, early-childhood education, scholarships, and enrichment programs, was intended to last for a decade; it ended in 2008 after two. Silber also created the Boston Scholars Program in 1973?the largest such scholarship program in the country. In 1993, he founded the Boston University Academy, a college preparatory school for secondary school students.

Silber served on the Kissinger Commission (the President?s National Bipartisan Commission on Central America), and was chair of the Massachusetts Board of Education, which during his tenure developed the first curriculum frameworks.

Despite his success in raising the University?s profile, Silber?s direct, unguarded critiques of students and faculty made him an unpopular figure in some circles at points in his career. In 1976, unhappy with what Time magazine called his ?overpowering style in office? and a proposed budget cut that could include faculty positions, 10 deans and three-quarters of the Faculty Assembly called for his resignation?a move that the Board of Trustees voted down.

His presidency was never again at stake, but Silber continued to draw public scrutiny over the years. He took a leave of absence from BU to run for governor of Massachusetts in 1990, and secured the Democratic nomination. His campaign was initially a success, but he failed to win over the old guard of the Democratic party, and ultimately lost to William Weld. After his return to the University, in 1993, the Massachusetts Attorney General investigated the finances of BU, and the University was asked to adjust its governance rules. In 1996, when he stepped down as president, he was named chancellor, maintaining an office on Bay State Road and continuing to live in BU-owned housing. In 2003, he was widely criticized for his role in selecting Daniel Goldin, a former administrator at NASA, as BU?s ninth president?and then dismissing him with a $1.3 million payout before Goldin took office.

Silber?s role at BU diminished over the next few years, as Aram Chobanian (Hon.?06), the former provost of the Medical Campus and School of Medicine dean, served as president ad interim, then president, until Robert A. Brown, the former provost of MIT, was appointed the 10th president of Boston University in 2005. Silber continued to live on the BU campus, but turned his attention to other interests, such as sculpture (he completed a bas-relief of Wiesel), and architecture. He published a well-reviewed critique of modernist architecture in 2008, taking special exception to the work of Frank Gehry, titled Architecture of the Absurd. In December 2011, he finished a critical analysis of the work of the German philosopher Immanuel Kant, a project he began in 1954 when he was a graduate student and member of the junior faculty at Yale. The book, Kant?s Ethics: The Good, Freedom, and the Will (Walter de Gruyter, 2012), was published in May.

John R. Silber, Boston University President emeritus and chancellor

In 2007, the University honored Silber with a gala tribute, featuring letters and presentations from colleagues, dignitaries, and friends. While many friends poked fun at the former president?s notorious frankness and occasional temper, others talked of his lesser-known kindness: letters and phone calls that came at times of illness or trouble, his habit of eating breakfast and dinner with his children every day, even at the most demanding moments of his career, and his long and loving relationship with his wife, Kathryn, who died in 2005.

?What I am most grateful for was the honor and privilege of serving for more than 30 years,? Silber said at the end of the evening. ?BU was one of the finest toys I was ever allowed to play with?a great toy with enormous potential, if you polished it up and gave it a few tools to make it run.?

Silber is survived by six daughters, Rachel Devlin and Martha Hathaway, of Newton, Mass., Judith Ballan, of New York City, Alexandra Silber, of Carlsbad, Calif., Ruth Belmonte, of State College, Pa., and Caroline Lavender, of Atlanta, Ga., a son, Charles Hiett, of Hot Springs, Ark., 26 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Phyllis Silber, of San Antonio, Tex., two nieces, and a great-niece and a great-nephew.

Funeral services will be private. A memorial service will take place in the near future. BU Today will provide details when they become available.

Curiosity goes to the flow

Mars rover appears to have landed in a dry streambed

Web edition : 6:57 pm

It seems NASA chose the Curiosity rover?s destination wisely: The craft appears to have landed right in an ancient streambed. Tasked with searching for signs of life-friendly environments on Mars, the rover can now cross off ?find evidence for water? from its life-friendly to-do list, NASA announced in a press conference September 27.

NASA sent Curiosity to Gale Crater because data from orbiting spacecraft suggested the site had a good chance of having once been wet. Still, the speed with which the discovery came seems to have surprised the team.

?It is exactly the reason we chose this landing site,? said project scientist John Grotzinger of Caltech.

The best evidence for ancient rushing water comes from the rocks Curiosity has paused to investigate while wheeling toward Mount Sharp, an enormous pile of sediment rising from the crater?s center. These rocks, called conglomerates, are made of pebbles cemented together by once-wet sediments. ?

In other words, they?re rocks made of rocks.

Curiosity glimpsed its first conglomerate at the landing site, where retrorocket engines dusted off the planet?s reddish veneer and revealed the speckled bedrock beneath. ?There?s a layer there that seems to have rocks embedded in it,? said Mike Malin of Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego. The feature is now named ?Goulburn,? after geologic deposits in northern Canada.

Then, after stretching its wheels, the rover encountered another site called ?Link,? where more conglomerate rocks were found. The pebbles there and elsewhere point toward a watery transport mechanism, said Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz. Smooth and polished, roughly 1 centimeter across ? the size of a plain M&M candy ? the pebbles couldn?t have been transported by anything except water. ?These are too large to be transported by wind,? Williams said. ?The consensus is that these are water-transported gravels.?

Eventually, the rover found a rock called Hottah (named for a Canadian lake), which juts out of the Martian dust at an angle, jagged edges pointed skyward. ?To us, it just looked like somebody came along the surface of Mars with a jackhammer and lifted up a sidewalk,? Grotzinger said.

The 10- to 15-centimeter thick outcrop was once submerged, he said. ?And we can characterize that water as being a vigorous flow, on the surface of Mars.?

The interpretation is robust, says geologist Joseph Michalski, also of the Planetary Science Institute. ?There aren?t very many ways by which you can produce rounded pebbles like that.?

But the water?s source ? whether melting ice, rainfall, or groundwater ? and its duration on the surface are still open questions.

Scientists think the Martian streambed grew from a canyon that funneled water into Gale Crater. Roughly 18 kilometers miles long, about 600 meters across and 30 meters deep, the canyon ? called Peace Vallis ? cut into the crater rim, sweeping sediments to the crater floor and forming a floodplain. Had Curiosity landed roughly 3.5 billion years ago, she might have found herself in a stream, ?from ankle to hip deep, and maybe moving a few feet a second,? said William Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

And while large, rounded pebbles certainly point to fast-flowing water, they don?t indicate anything about the flow?s duration, Michalski says. ?You may have had punctuated activity, or it could have been sustained for a shorter period,? he says. ??It doesn?t mean that it had to stay wet for millions of years.?

So, is it mission accomplished? Game over for the rover?

Not quite.

The rover is still tasked with searching for signs of a life-friendly environment, and with exploring the rocky record contained in the layers of Mount Sharp. In addition to water, the rover will look for organic carbon ? from which life could be built ? and molecules that could serve as an energy source. ?We?ve got a hall pass for the water observation,? Grotzinger said. ?Now we?re going to move on to the chemical building blocks of life and the elemental chemistry and the mineralogy.?

Thermoelectric efficiency boost is good news for solar

Sally Adee, technology features editor

rexfeatures_849965a.jpg

(Image: F1 Online/Rex Features)

For more than half a century, researchers have been trying to salvage the substantial amounts of waste heat lost in fossil fuel plants and combustion engines. Heat loss throws away 40 per cent of petrol energy through the car's exhaust, and two-thirds of coal energy from coal-fired power plants.

Their putative ability to mop up that lost energy has made thermoelectric materials a perpetual Cinderella technology. The materials use heat to create "free" electricity: current is generated when the temperature difference between the hot side (say, the exhaust) and the cool side (the ambient air) pushes electrons from one side of the material to the other.

In practice, however, thermoelectric materials reclaim at best only 5 to 7 per cent of the lost energy. Their efficiency - a material's ability to generate electricity for a given amount of thermal energy - is reflected in a figure called its ZT. For 50 years, researchers have struggled to push that number past 1.

The most straightforward approach is to coax a material to conduct electricity, while preventing the heat from migrating (because efficiency depends on preserving the difference between the material's hot and cold sides). That means decoupling electrons from phonons - a phonon is to heat transfer what an electron is to electricity. Essentially, a phonon is a quasiparticle that can be functionally thought of the vibrations that carry thermal energy.

In other words, let the electrons flow while stopping the phonons in their tracks. But they have been difficult to decouple. So thermoelectrics been relegated to applications of last resort, such as in space, where the small amount of energy they reclaim is worth the cost of the expensive materials.

Then, last week, researchers at Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois, published a paper in Nature which indicates that they've kicked the ZT from 1 to 2.2. They did it by disturbing the flow of three different wavelengths of the phonons, which allowed the electrons to pass while trapping the phonons in layers, which they compared to a Russian doll. Pushing the ZT to 2.2 bumped the overall efficiency up to 20 per cent.

Their work has tantalising implications for a far more consumer-friendly application: solar panels. Normally these can only metabolise the photons from the high-frequency part of the electromagnetic spectrum, meaning most of the sun's rays are lost as waste heat.

Use thermoelectric materials to harness the entire spectrum and your solar panel will get whopping good efficiencies. Charles Stafford, who works on materials that can disrupt phonon flow at the University of Arizona in Tucson, calls the new research "very exciting work".

Facebook is not posting your private messages

1 day

Fears that Facebook recently?posted users' private messages going back to as early as 2007?are false, but the viral concern about it?has led to a fair amount of panic among some users, and now even the French government.

Officials asked Facebook representatives in that country to appear before France's?data privacy agency on?Tuesday to explain how it is that some Facebook users believe their privacy was violated by the sudden appearance of old messages that some believed were private.?

On?Monday, a similar ripple of concern reverberated on various websites around the world. But what's showing up are not one-to-one messages, but old wall posts users made way back when.

The wall?posts?are appearing on Facebook's Timeline, which shows your Facebook information on a year-by-year basis. Timeline, not beloved by everyone, started being rolled out to all of Facebook's 955 milllion?users worldwide?in recent weeks by the social network.

NBC News contacted Facebook, and a spokesperson said that "a small number of?users raised concerns after what they believed to be private messages appeared on their Timeline.?Our engineers investigated these reports and found that the messages were older wall posts that had always been visible on the users' profile pages. Facebook is satisfied that there has been no breach of user privacy."

Here on the Tech team, we checked our own Facebook accounts to make sure. Indeed, older posts were showing up on our Timelines. But they were not the private emails, or direct messages, that are sent between Facebook users and are?not visible to anyone else.?

They were, however, a story from another time, a time when Facebook friends really were friends, and it was a smaller virtual?community than it is now.?

Of course, many of us?shared our addresses,?phone numbers and?what now seem like very?personal messages as wall posts because most of us?a) ?didn't have more than 200 "friends" like we do now and B) ?we didn't know better then; Facebook was still a magical place and we were digitally naive.

Also, Facebook hadn't yet become a behemoth, although it was on its way. In 2008, it had 100?million users. In early 2009, a headline from Mashable?said: "Facebook Has 150 Million Active Users. Whoa."

There are good reasons to be wary of what Facebook does and doesn't do these days. Trying to navigate your own settings can be a headache; Facebook still does not make it as easy as it should. And late last year, Facebook agreed to settle federal charges that it violated users' privacy by getting people to share more information than they agreed to when signing up for Facebook.

Ness Dining Guide (for iPhone)

Burned out on the predictable recommendations from Yelp, Foursquare, Recco, and other socially driven dining apps? Ness Dining Guide (free) makes a solid go at recommending eateries it thinks you'll like based on your prior experiences, as well as data from a number of social networks. It culls information from not just your friends and preferences, but several social networks more generally, looking for chatter on Twitter, Facebook Places check-ins, reviews on Citysearch, and more to determine when a restaurant or bar is happening.

Design and Interface
Ness has good looks on its side, with a very pretty interface full of gorgeous backdrop photos of brightly colored sushi rolls, mile-high pies, darling espresso cup sets, and more. On most screens, these photos fill the screen with buttons and text entry fields layered on top with semi-transparent windows to keep all that delicious food in sight.

The opening screen uses the background images to show different types of restaurants that it can recommend, such as Asian, Middle Eastern, bakery, and brewery. Six options appear on screen, with more available as you swipe right-to-left. A search box sits in the center if you choose to type instead.

Searching with typed text can be simple or complex. You might enter a type of cuisine, signature food served (like pizza, burgers, ice cream), or name of a restaurant. Or you can add more filters, such as distance from your current location and price range. One great set of filters is called "hide," which lets you suppress restaurants that are "closed now," "rated" if don't want to go to a place you've been (and therefore rated on Ness) before, and "big chains" to make sure Micky Dee's doesn't crop up in the results.

Functionality and Recommendations
Ness prompts you to rate at least a few businesses before you really dive into the app so that it can better guess what you'll like. In fact, it shows you right on screen how many more four-and five-star ratings it wants you to give before it's fairly certain it can do a good job. To give it some basis, I searched for restaurants in the neighborhoods where I've lived and worked, as well as places I tend to eat out most.

As I'm in New York City, the selection of restaurants can be daunting, even after you drill down to a specific neighborhood. In looking, for example, in my old stomping ground of Astoria, I recognized a lot of delis and take-out restaurants in Ness, but didn't see my favorite pizzeria, a new ramen shop that's more than decent, or a specialty grilled cheese and beer restaurant that has gotten a lot of well deserved buzz in the two-and-a-half years since it opened. I noticed the same pattern of well-known (and well-respected) restaurants not showing up in other neighborhoods, like midtown east and Williamsburg, Brooklyn, too.

It's also difficult to go back or undo an action if you make an error. For example, when you rate restaurants from a list, giving it anywhere from one to five stars, it then disappears from the list instantly. A few times, my clumsy fingers hit the wrong number of stars, and I cursed when I realized I couldn't easily change it. (You can go through a preferences section to make changes to existing reviews, but that involves finding it from the main navigation bar, opening the correct area, and swiping through what could be a very long list of rated restaurants.)

Considering I didn't find some of my favorite restaurants auto-populating Ness' lists by area, I was pleasantly surprised when it came time to get some recommendations. Ness guessed my taste in coffee shops fairly accurately, suggesting I'd more than "like" a few coffee houses that I regularly visit.

Ness actually generates a percent score for how much it thinks you'll enjoy a restaurant. A lot of my scores keep hitting the 62 to 71 percent range (which amounts to "like but not love"), and I have yet to see Ness confidently declare that I'll love a place. But on the whole, the recommendations fit my tastes.

Socially Enhanced
Ness hooks into a lot of other social networks. You can connect with Foursquare and Facebook accounts to see what's going on among your friends' dining activities, but the app pulls in other valuable crowd-sourced information, too.

For example, you can look up the "popularity" of, say, a doughnut shop ("#1 in Greenpoint!"), which considers the number of people talking about it on Facebook and Twitter, as well as check-ins to the business via Foursquare and Facebook Places, and reviews on Citysearch. The variety of information going into the popularity rankings seems to do the results some good. When you only consider one selected social network for popularity, you can get some pretty predictable results. Ness' analyze a very good range of people, tastes, and opinions.

My favorite section of the app is for photos, which come from Instagram rather than a food-specific social network. Instagram photos, super-saturated or washed out as they may be, tend to look better than photos on Yelp, Facebook, or Foursquare. The photos show a lot of lovely food and some random faces that sometimes give you an even better sense of an undiscovered diner and its clientele.

Dine With Ness
Food-focused people should download Ness and explore its recommendations, especially when dining out in a large city that has a plethora of neighborhoods and eating options. I like that Ness' recommendations don't rely solely on information from its users, instead raking in recommendations, photos, and mentions from a variety of sites.

MONEY? News ? Portland Exotic Veterinarian Joins Up With Animal ...

PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 23, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) ? Paws and Claws Pet Medical Center, one of the only Portland animal vet clinics to provide exotic veterinary care, announced the addition of a visiting exotic and avian veterinarian. Dr. Ross Weinstein will be joining the vet center as a temporary visiting veterinarian starting in late September. Dr. Weinstein will be at the veterinary hospital every Monday throughout the month of October. Dr. Weinstein will be assisting the hospital?s veterinarians, Dr. Pollock and Dr. DeRemer, in providing exotic and avian pet care for the Portland East County pet community.

Portland avian veterinarian Dr. Ken DeRemer announced that an additional exotic and avian veterinarian will be temporarily joining Paws and Claws Pet Medical Center. Dr. Ross Weinstein, formerly with the North Portland veterinary hospital, will be assisting in avian and exotic pet care on Mondays, starting September 24, and every Monday in October.

?We are excited to welcome Dr. Weinstein to assist in providing additional exotic vet care,? said Dr. DeRemer. ?Dr. Weinstein is a talented exotic and avian veterinarian and will be a tremendous asset to our veterinary hospital. With Dr. Weinstein?s addition, Paws and Claws will be one of the only Portland exotic veterinarians to have three exotic and avian veterinarians on staff.?

The clinic?s Portland exotic veterinary services include wellness exams, vaccinations, emergency care, and pet surgery. Dr. DeRemer and exotic veterinarian Dr. Pollock see all types of avian and exotic species. Veterinarian Dr. Huntsinger also provides care for pocket pets.

The Gresham exotic veterinary care team recommends regular exams for exotics. According to Dr. DeRemer, many pet owners do not realize that an annual exam is just as important for birds and exotic pets as it is for dogs and cats.

?Owning birds or other exotic pets can be an exciting and rewarding experience,? said Dr. DeRemer. ?Like cats and dogs, exotic pets require regular wellness care to stay healthy. Paws and Claws Pet Medical Center is one of the only Portland veterinary hospitals to provide comprehensive care for exotic animals.?

Exotic services include physicals, diagnostic exams, and nutrition counseling. For example, a fecal exam helps ensure that reptiles, such as iguanas and snakes, are parasite-free.

?Some exotic pets, including reptiles and birds, can live a very long time, while others, such as pocket pets, have a shorter life expectancy,? said Dr. DeRemer. ?Preventative care ensures that a pet?s unique nutrition and habitat needs are met, and that they are free from parasites or diseases.?

In addition to preventative care, the animal hospital provides surgical care and urgent care for exotic and avian pets. The temporary addition of Dr. Weinstein to the exotic veterinarian care team will allow the clinic to provide more appointments and services for exotic pets.

Pet owners may schedule an appointment by calling the hospital or visiting http://pawsandclawsvet.com/.

3 Reasons Lifting Weights Works Better Than Cardio for Fat Loss ...

?

While diet is generally the biggest factor involved in any successful weight loss program, exercise is a crucial element to accelerate your fat loss and put you on the path to long term good health and weight maintenance.

However, I see people all the time sabotaging their success by following conventional wisdom methods. At best, these nonsense exercise programs are boring waste of time. At worst, they can actually slow your progress!

If you were going to design an exercise program to compliment your dieting efforts, what type of exercises would you do? If you?re like most people, the first thing that comes to mind is long, grueling sessions of aerobic exercise. Maybe you picture jogging lap after lap, or putting on your headphones in tuning out on an elliptical machine. Maybe your idea of a weight loss program is signing up for the step aerobics class at your local gym.

If so, then I?m delighted to give you the good news that your days of sweating and huffing and puffing are over.

Now, I don?t mean to say that Cardio workouts are completely useless. As part of a general health program, they can be very helpful. They are a great way to improve your cardiovascular function and can low your cholesterol and blood pressure.

However, if your goal is to lose weight, cardio can actually hurt your progress. The reason is that the goal of exercises for weight loss is to increase your total daily calorie expenditure.

When you do cardio, you are only burning calories while you are doing the exercise. When you do weight Lifting, you keep burning calories for days after your workout. When you do cardio, you can actually make your muscle shrink which means you will gain fat even if you eat don?t increase your calorie intake! When you lift weights, you gain metabolically active tissue (that is to say, muscle) which will mean you can eat more food without gaining fat.

Let me explain the three main reasons that resistance training is definitely the best method for sustainable fat loss:

1. Lifting Weights Burn Calories for Days!

Weight lifting causes something called EPOC, which stands for Excessive Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption. In layman?s terms, this means your muscles keep using up oxygen to burn calories (just like when you do cardio) for days after your stop working out. The effect of this can be very dramatic. Often a single 20min weight lifting workout will burn more calories than hours of cardio.

2. Lifting Weights Builds Muscle!

Muscle burns calories all day, every day. Even when you?re sleeping. This raises your basal metabolic rate, meaning that you can eat more calories while losing weight. That way, you?ll feel better and won?t be hungry all the time, so you?ll stick to your diet longer.

Don?t worry ladies, because you have low testosterone levels, you won?t build bulky muscles. You will still receive the fat loss benefits though.

3. Lifting Weights is Easier, Faster, and More Fun!

The rule of thumb with any lifestyle change is that the more unpleasant it is, the harder it is to stick with. If you?re anything like me, its hard to imagine anything more unpleasant than cardio! With weight lifting, you can be in an out of the gym is less than half an hour, and you only have to do it two or three times a week. What could be easier?

If you don?t know how to set up a weight lifting program, check out the links to my website below where you can find more info on setting up an effective program for weight loss.

Smith had barely slept and wasn't even sure if he would play. He had driven home?to Virginia after learning hours earlier his younger brother Tevin had been killed in a motorcycle accident. Shortly before grabbing an hour of sleep, at around 5:30 a.m., he tweeted about how much his brother meant to him.

An hour later, as tributes to his brother were pouring in,?Smith posted a picture of the two of them together, saying, "I can't say a bad thing about him... proud to have him as a brother. ..."

At 4:30 p.m. Sunday,?he finally made the decision he would play ??in honor of his brother.

"It was tough emotionally. I didn?t know how I would hold up," Smith said after the game. "I was telling my teammates a minute ago that this is new territory for me personally. I never really had to deal with a death in the family, let alone my brother. In our family, everyone?s so tight. Just like a lot of other families. It?s part of life and, due to my teammates and my family and friends, I?ll be able to get over it.?

When Smith got to the stadium, he said he texted his mother.

"That?s when I really made my decision I was going to play," Smith told reporters?at a press conference after the game. "So she was excited about it. She was like, ?Of course, he?d want you to play.? He?d admired me so much ... and it?s just a tough situation altogether."

Smith received words of encouragement from everyone inside the club and around the globe. On Twitter, fans shared their?condolences. Inside the clubhouse, safety Ed Reed, who lost his brother in 2011, gave Smith a psalm that he hoped would help him through the tough time.

"God?s in control, and God has a plan bigger than ours. We don?t know our time, none of us. We all experience the same things, so I just told him that we?re here for him; I?m here for him," Reed said, recalling his conversation with Smith to reporters after the game.

"I can relate to him. I told him we get so caught up, like our pastor said today, in the physical and what we see. I still talk to my (late) brother to this day because I know there's much more to us than just being here. I told him that he could still have those conversations. Just know that he?s in a much better place."

Taking the field Sunday night,?Smith was moved by a moment of silence for his brother.

?That touched me right there, the fact that the organization took the time out to honor my brother, one of my family members, who had absolutely nothing to do with this program besides me," Smith said. "He loved being up here. His birthday was October 6, coming up. He was going to come up Thursday, come to the game versus the Browns, raid my house all week. I?m just thankful (for)?the organization; it?s everything I thought it would be. The way they care about you. That?s the reason I wanted to be in Baltimore. That?s the reason I wanted to be a Raven.?

And it seems that Smith wanted to make his team and his brother proud.

He played a spectacular game,?with two touchdowns and?127 yards on six catches, despite the adversity and pain. His brother, he said, was everything to him.

"He?s honest, he had a great heart. A lot of people say that all the time when people pass, but he truly was that person," Smith told reporters. "When you see him mad, you?d always laugh because it didn?t look right. So, to be around him, his big smile and his laugh, which was probably one of the most annoying laughs ever, I?m definitely going to miss him. He laughed so hard at everything, and you know, he?d do anything for you. It?s a tough loss for us."

Smith?helped lead his team to a 31-30 victory against the Patriots.

In the second quarter, he hauled in a 25-yard pass to put the Ravens on the board for the first time and cut the score to 13-7.

He fell to the ground as he pulled in the pass. After the touchdown, he took a knee and pointed up to the sky. It's a typical move for players, but the meaning was much more personal Sunday night.

"I just said a quick prayer, took a knee. You know, obviously you play with a heavy heart; you want to play for that person," Smith said after the game.

It was the first of Smith's two key touchdowns that helped lift the Ravens toward victory.

"How do you explain it? Coming from a faith perspective, God and heaven work in ... mysterious, wonderful ways," head coach John Harbaugh said of Smith's performance. "I am not talking about winning and losing; I am talking about what you see people accomplish in the face of adversity. That?s really what it?s all about. To me, that?s one of the great things about sports."

The support from his team, rivals and fans helped give Smith the extra push he needed,?the player?told reporters.

"He seemed like he was ready to play football and ready to go out there and help us get a win," Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco said. "That was great; we all wanted to rally around him and go get it for him."

Getting the win proved to be a tough task for the Ravens, who finally sealed the game with a last-minute field goal.?But it was?Smith's performance that?stood out for most of the players.

"I think he did what his brother would have wanted him to do, and that?s to go out and play like a Raven," running back Ray Rice said afterward. "And what a show he put on for his brother tonight."
