So why aren?t these reality shows helping in the fat fight?

JD Roth, executive producer of ?Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition,? thinks they actually are.

?The first step to changing some systemic problem in society is awareness and I think (weight) awareness is at an all-time high,? says the 43-year-old producer, who is also behind ?Biggest Loser.?

Dr. Terry Schaack, medical director of the California Health Longevity Institute, where ?Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss? participants do an introductory ?boot camp,? says there can be a long delay between awareness and action.

?You will see nothing in national figures for probably eight to 10 years after a dramatic incident occurs,? he says. ?The U.S. Surgeon General went out and told people to quit smoking, I believe it was in ?67. A hoard of people quit smoking, and the incidence of heart disease went down 15 or 20 years later. It takes that long.?

In the meantime, in addition to ?The Biggest Loser,? an ample array of weight-loss shows should offer plenty of inspiration to Americans trying to slim down:

Yet even as the number of weight-loss shows continues to expand, so does the nation?s waistline. More than 72 million Americans are considered obese and millions more are overweight.

Still, the health and fitness industry continues to flourish: Dietary Supplements bring in $26.9 billion annually, health clubs generate $24.8 billion a year, weight-loss centers take in $3.9 billion in revenue annually ? and all are poised to grow. But industry-watchers say this has nothing to do with weight-related reality shows.

?Fitness shows are not driving the trends in fitness, but more grabbing onto the coattails of the success of the fitness industry,? says Taylor Hamilton, an analyst with IBIS World. He attributes the growth in gym locations and memberships to an increased overall emphasis on fitness nationwide.

In the Crimean peninsula, referred to as the Crimea, is a beautiful place in the summer months, the climate and the amount of sunny days makes this a perfect place for the climbers and nature lovers in general.

The Crimean peninsula occupies an area of around 26,000 sq.km.The nearest international airport is Kiev but a closer international airport is located in Simferopol. There are 30 curative lakes, 120 thermal medical springs, 10,000 historical and cultural monuments in the peninsula.

The Crimea (Krim) attracts mountain bikers, tourists, rock-climbers etc. 3 main ridges are found in the mountains of Crimea. The main one reaches a height of 1545 meters above sea level, the Internal, represented by separate rocky massifs which heights are ranging from 500 to 600 meters above the sea level, and the External with insignificant heights. The Southern coast is known for its mild climate. That is a narrow ground strip between the Main ridge and the Black sea.

There are at least 11 nice climbing sites with fully equipped routes grading from climbing grades 4 to 9a. The most popular sites are situated in the area of Great Yalta, from the Foros to Krasnokamenka. It is therefore convenient to stay in one of hotels in the city of Yalta and do one-day climbings at the various sites. Most of routes are about the climbing grade of 7a. The climate in Crimea allows climbing from April through October months.

Nikita (5 km. from Yalta) is one of the most popular mountain climbing site in Crimea. Thanks to Andrey Vedenmeyer who were the world champion in 1995 for his efforts making the routes in this site. There are about 80 routes grading from 5a to 9a (according to the American grades; 5.9 ? 5.14). The majority of the routes are overhanging. Height of the site is 12-25 m. As it is a gorge, one can climb opposite cliffs all the day long. Some of the routes were made by climbers from France. Very often one can meet here World famous climbers in this site.

Nikita is situated nearby Yalta and the fabulous Nikitsky botanical gardens and it is near to the highway, so it is easy to access.

Red Stone (village Krasnokamenka). It takes 20-25 minutes by car to the east of Yalta to reach the climbing site. The nearest villages are Gurzuf and the cliff is situated in the village Krasnokamenka. There are about 100 routes grading from 5a-8c. Often these routes have prolonged problems. It is best to use a 60 meters rope on this site. Shops are rather well equipped and you can buy for every day utilities and food there. There is also a small street market here. Many world famous climbers make a trial in this site as well. The site has a nice scenic aspect as there is a lake at the east side of this rock. It is only 50 minutes walking from the Black sea to the site.

Koshka (Cat). The mountain limits the area of the village. There are bbout 30 routes grading from 5a-8a. Route height range from 13-27 meters. You will find slab at the beginning, overhangs (niches, cornices) in the above sections. Lots of juniper trees are found at the foot. A 4-pitch route with crux up to 6c+ leading on the top.

Krylo Lebedya (Swan?s wing). 5 minutes on foot from Koshka and you will find more than 30 routes grading from 6a-8a. Route height range from 20-30 meters. The cliff is on the beach. As there are three sectors differently directed, it is possible to climb almost all the day long.

Parus (near vill. Foros). The climbing site Parus is situated to the about 2 km west from Foros, which is around 50 km from Yalta, 15 minutes walking up from the highway going from Sevastopol to Yalta. Lime rocks here are quite young, often overhanging, and resemble much of indoor climbing walls.

Because of the overhangs it is possible to climb even if it rains. The rocks here are not sharp, so it allows holding hands in good condition for other sites.

It is hot here in summer even in the shade at noon. That is why one climbs here in the morning or afternoon. Near to the site there are several shops, a small street market and cafes. One can taste here Tatars and Uzbek cuisine in one of the restaurants. Bakhchisarai is a town well known for its sightseeing: Khans? Palace, Cave monastery and Cave town. So there is a chance to combine the climbing with some sightseeing as well.

Uarch-Kaya. This is a site, situated between Foros and Simeiz at about 2 km from the highway between Yalta and Sevastopol. The site is near the old road between Yalta and Sevastopol. The location is about 45 km. from Yalta. Uarch-Kaya is a site for rock climbing and multi-pitch climbing. All the routes are well equipped grading from 6a to 8c+. The total number of routes are more than 50.

Sudak. This site is situated in town of Sudak, just opposite the famous Genoese fortress. One can try about 15 routes grading from 6b to 7c. It is a very small site, actually just a crag. Because of rather dry climate in South-East part

Something's not right in Long Beach, Calif. It's not just the city's high crime rate or its pervasive level of poverty, though both are notable. Instead, the trouble concerns the football team at Long Beach Poly High, which has, after decades of laying waste to rivals, suddenly started losing games.

Depicting that dilemma, 4th and Forever, Current TV's new docuseries about the struggling team, is a case study in how a reality-television framework can corrupt potentially interesting subject matter. Although its team of producers -- Brian Graden, Alex Rader, Lois Curren (Making Menudo), Clint Stinchcomb, Michael Hughes and Stephen Land (Sons of Guns) -- has hit upon a topic that, like the films Hoop Dreams?and Off the Rez?before it, has the makings of something more profound than a win-loss record, 4th and Forever is hamstrung by the decision to string out its drama into an all-too-repetitive series, rather than an economical one-off documentary.

"I've led Poly to four regional championships," head coach Raul Lara tells the camera. "Last year we were 6-6 [7-5, including a forfeit win] -- unacceptable season. This year we're gonna try and get back on top. If not, I'm outta here."

During the premiere, Lara reiterates that "make or break"/"now or never"/"win or go home"/"this is it" point as if reading from a sports-cliche handbook.

Far more interesting than whether the team will regain its form on the field, however, are the subplots of its players.

Jeremiah Hollowell, a senior running back, epitomizes the many aspiring athletes on the team who grew up in the roughest environs of Long Beach.

"My older two brothers also went to Long Beach Poly and got college scholarships," Hollowell says. "I've been in gangs, and my mother's afraid I won't make it out of Long Beach, so she rides me hard."

That description turns out to be a bit of an understatement. Hollowell injures his shoulder during the year's first practice, potentially endangering his college hopes. Having raised four children on her own for 15 years while Jeremiah's father has been in federal prison, Hollowell's mother unloads on her son.

"I'm sorry if I'm getting emotional, Jeremiah, because I want you to be the best," she says with frightening intensity and tears rolling down her cheeks. "Not good, cause good ain't good enough for mine -- the best."

She then pulls out a tattered family Bible and makes Jeremiah swear an oath that he'll "man up" and apply himself anew to football, whatever his sore shoulder is telling him.

At such moments, this reality show feels, well, real. But as the stories of other players are told, you can't help but become aware of the multiple camera angles that capture seemingly intimate moments, and the way the crew seems set up in just the right spot for family members to enter and deliver their well-worn lines about hard work and success. Worse still are the poorly edited game sequences, over which an unforgivably phony announcer's play-by-play has been added.

"Poly having a real hard time stopping the running game and -- whoa! Whoa! Here's another questionable hit," the fictitious announcer proclaims during an on-field scuffle at a preseason scrimmage.

Such staging might not be so conspicuous, but because this is a reality series, apparently, we often have to see the same scenes before and after commercial breaks, as if our memory spans were too short to withstand the interruption of car and pizza ads.

To be fair, there is suspense in learning whether Jeremiah and other Poly players make good, on and off the field. But that's also what makes watching 4th and Forever?so frustrating: You end up wanting more than it delivers.

Without depth to its storytelling, all that's left is the question of whether Poly's football team will return to form in 2010. But after sitting through the repetitive premiere, some viewers will be tempted to visit Google for a quicker answer.

Sand Granted Restraining Order Against Husband

Former Playboy pin-up Shauna Sand has been granted a restraining order against her husband following the pair's arrest on domestic violence charges earlier last week (beg16Mar11).

Cops were called to the blonde's home in California late on Wednesday following reports of a fight. The model and her husband Laurent Homburger were arrested and taken to a police station in Beverly Hills where they were booked in the early hours of Thursday.

Sand was released on bail, while Homburger remained in custody, and the star wasted no time in requesting a protective order against her partner.

A judge granted the order on Friday and Homburger is legally required to stay at least 100 yards away from Sand and her children until 9 June, when the restraining order will be evaluated.

According to TMZ.com, the fight came a week after Sand filed for divorce from her husband on 12 May.
