Business Security Information ? Theft Alert

As most businesses know, gas prices have skyrocketed over the past year.? This has resulted in a higher percentage of customers stealing gas, not only from gas stations, but also from government facilities and businesses.

Most of the stolen gas has been from stations that still allow customers to pump first before paying.? I do not know of any gas station that still allows customers to pump gas or fill up before they pay where we live?? If you are one that does allow customers to fill up first, however, you may want to change your business practice.? Also, look at security measures when the gas station is closed.? There have been cases where thieves have broken into underground tank covers and pumped fuel directly out of the underground tank.

Other types of businesses may also want to take additional precautions.? Large quantities of fuel were stolen from a truck rental facility which means trucking companies and other facilities that have large fleets and/or fuel their own fleet vehicles are vulnerable as well.? Another large quantity theft occurred from a contractor.? Construction or general contractors usually have fuel either in equipment and/or on-site for fueling purposes.? Because of the temporary nature of the work, though, construction sites usually don?t have adequate security.?? In addition, any business that has trucks and other vehicles? parked during non-business hours should be aware that their fuel can be siphoned.

I would recommend that any business that has a quantity of fuel look at increasing security measures to protect the business.? Specific security measures will depend on the type of business, what needs to be protected, and environmental factors.? It is beyond the scope of this article to touch base on all possible security measures for this type of theft situation, but please leave a comment on any successful security measures you took that were successful in protecting your business from fuel theft.
