Green Realty Offers Pasco Sustainability and Profitability | Ecology ...

The amount of involvement, better yet, the variety of involvement and the intensity and motivation displayed by those involved in building a sustainable future never ceases to impress me.? Like-minded individuals in the Green quest come from all walks of life.? They bring their knowledge and business sense into a melting pot of ideas in which each ingredient comes together to form a comprehensive blend of sustainability and profitability.

The planet has been weakened by years of short-sighted industrial, corporate, and progress driven irresponsibility.? In lieu of an overnight overhaul of the entire greed influenced, carbon emitting, fossil fuel propelled model of the developed and developing worlds, local advocates for a better tomorrow are joining together into a coalition of growers, organizers, and developers to plant the seeds of sustainability and renewal into the inherent psyche of the business world.

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down and discussing the importance of? going green as it pertains to real estate development and retrofitting of existing properties with Nancy Johnson of F.I Grey & Sons and local writer of the Green Column in the Pasco Press, Tish Osborne.

These savvy business women introduced me and two of my colleagues to the ins and outs of Green Realty.? The fundamentals of Green Realty are based on the LEED certification process, Green Resource Council, and the Florida Green Building Coalition, or FGBC guidelines.? Another component to Green Realty is educating both buyers and Real Estate developers as to the benefits of using renewable energy and retrofitting existing residential, multi- family, and commercial properties in accordance with LEED certification range from federal and state tax credits to savings, that universally come with the use of renewable energy.

Nancy and Tish explained that they became certified through a course on Green Realty three years ago.? They discussed the efforts of the FGBC, which is a non- profit organization that educates builders, developers, local government, and consumers on the benefits of green building for a healthy sustainable future.? The FGBC website cites their goals as ?to lead and promote sustainability with environmental, economic, and social benefits through regional education and certification programs.?? They offer a database of certifying agents and members, along with green building projects.? They also create and distribute two publications, Green Trends Newsletter and Florida Green Building Magazine.

The Green Resource Council encourages agents with incentives and the benefits of going green. They offer courses in the field and encourage agents to promote the philosophy of ?going green? and act as leaders in the charge to secure sustainable and energy efficient communities. Their mission statement concludes with ?we can make a significant impact on the world around us.?? That they can.

Structures can be an environmental nightmare.? Energy consumption alone is a primary motivator for the use of dirty unsustainable practices within the energy industry.? A useful website, DSIRE? (Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency), explains the monetary benefits and tax incentives of retrofitting properties with solar and geothermal energy. Along with the savings that come in the form of a reduced electric bill, federal and state tax incentives are offered for sustainable retrofitting.? Loans can be acquired for these practices as well.

Nancy Johnson and Tish Osborne are fantastic people. They are innovators.? Along with building codes and energy incentives, we also discussed issues with contemporary recycling programs, hydraulic fracturing, coal burning, tar sands, sinkholes, green builders, green plumbers, and the survival of the polar bear.

Like-minded people need to continue to band together in a struggle that transcends class and politic to continue transforming our modern business models. Do you know of other industries or businesses in the area who are taking steps in this direction? Let us know about them in the comments below.
