BANNER ELK, N.C. ? Davidson cyclist Jay Fesperman picked up a sixth place in downhill and a seventh place in slalom for his age group Sunday at the USA Cycling 2011 Gravity Mountain Bike Nationals at Beech Mountain.

Fellow Davidsonian Eric Vest was 16th out of 16 in same downhill race, but got a second place in the 2nd category junior slalom race.

Fesperman, a Community School of Davidson high school sophomore, and Vest, a sophomore at Hough High, both ride for Specialized/GROM Racing, a junior mountain bike team led by Christopher Herndon of Brevard. They traveled to this weekend?s national championships after qualifying at races over the summer.

Fesperman had won his age category at last year?s national event in Granby, Colo.

The dual slalom races, which pit two racers on parallel tracks, were Saturday. Downhill races, where, riders race individually against the clock, were Sunday.
