Obama calls Korean DMZ: 'Freedom's frontier'

U.S. President Barack Obama looks through binoculars on Sunday to see North Korea from Observation Post Ouellette in the Demilitarized Zone, the tense military border between the two Koreas.

SEOUL -- President Barack Obama was greeted with cheers from U.S. troops as he visited the dining hall at Camp Bonifas at the start of his tour of the Demilitarized Zone on the Korean peninsula and told them that they were protecting "freedom's frontier."

Obama talked about how proud he was of the troops and joked about the NCAA basketball tournament. While, the president has visited the Republic of Korea twice before, this was his first time observing the 38th parallel and members of North Korea?s military.

At Camp Bonifas, Obama told U.S. troops that they are part of a "long line" of soldiers who have enabled South Korea to prosper. "You guys are at freedom's frontier," he said.

While at the DMZ, the president spoke to South Korean troops, then went to Observation Post Ouellette, the closest post overlooking the demarcation line on the most heavily guarded border in the world.

The observation post is about 25 miles northwest of Seoul inside the DMZ and just 100 yards from demarcation line. The North Korean army is visible from this observation post and it was expected that the North Koreans would jam cell phone signals while the president was visiting the area.

In advance of the trip, White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said that the president?s visit to the DMZ ?sends a clear message that the United States is committed to the security of our ally and that the commander in chief stands with those 28,000 Americans that are serving on the Korean peninsula.?

President Barack Obama greets US troops at Camp Bonifas in Paju during a visit to the Demilitarized Zone on the border between North and South Korea on Sunday.

The United States has more than 28,000 troops in South Korea, a legacy of the Korean War six decades ago. Camp Bonifas was renamed in 1986 in honor of US Army Capt. Arthur Bonifas, who was killed by North Korean soldiers in a 1976 ax attack.

Every president since President Ronald Reagan has visited the DMZ.?

The president?s visit comes a day before he is set to participate in the second international Nuclear Security Summit.

During his trip to South Korea for a summit to discuss keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists, President Obama will visit the heavily guarded area along the North Korean border. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

While the subject of North Korea is not officially on the list of topics for the summit, the North's presence looms large because of the announcement that it is planning to test a long-range rocket in April.

There were some indications that North Korea was going to suspend some of its nuclear activities. But then the North Koreans announced a satellite launch in April that, according to Rhodes, ?can also serve, frankly, as a ballistic missile test as well.? Obama is expected to call upon Chinese President Hu Jintao to urge North Korea to back away from the planned launch.

(AP) ? "The Hunger Games" has filled fan appetites with a $155 million opening weekend that puts it near the top of the domestic record book.

The huge haul marks the third-best debut ever in terms of revenue, behind the $169.2 million opening for last year's "Harry Potter" finale and the $158.4 million opening of 2008's "The Dark Knight."

"Harry Potter" and "Batman" were well-established franchises. "The Hunger Games" set a revenue record for a non-sequel, taking in more than twice what the first "Twilight" movie did with its $69.6 million opening weekend.

"This is the birth of a franchise. To launch in this fashion is mindboggling," said David Spitz, head of distribution at Lionsgate, which now also owns the "Twilight" franchise after its purchase of Summit Entertainment.

While it's already a blockbuster on its North American home turf, "The Hunger Games" had a much slower start overseas. The film took in a modest $59.3 million in 67 markets, including Great Britain, Germany, France, Russia and Australia.

The "Harry Potter" finale took in a record $314 million overseas in its debut last summer, and half a dozen other films have opened with more than $200 million outside the United States.

Even "John Carter," a dud domestically, managed to take in more than "The Hunger Games" overseas, launching with $70.6 million in 55 international markets two weekends ago.

Still, "The Hunger Games" amassed a worldwide total of $214.3 million in just a few days.

Domestically, it also was by far the biggest start for a film opening outside the busy summer and holiday seasons. According to Sunday studio estimates, "The Hunger Games" came in nearly $40 million ahead of the previous March record-holder, 2010's "Alice in Wonderland" at $116.1 million.

"The Hunger Games" slid into the No. 3 spot on the domestic revenue chart ahead of "Spider-Man 3," which opened with $151.1 million in 2007. Factoring in today's higher tickets prices, "The Hunger Games" sold fewer tickets over opening weekend than "Spider-Man 3," though.

Fans camped out for the first screenings of "The Hunger Games," which began just after midnight Friday. Many fans showed up dressed as favorite characters from the story.

"That type of behavior puts it on the level of the 'Star Treks' and 'Star Wars,'" Spitz said. "I was so excited to see how everyone was responding to the material and how ecstatic they were to be a part of it."

With a broader fan base than the "Twilight" franchise, "The Hunger Games" pulled in bigger crowds than the top-grossing installment of that series. "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" leads that franchise with a $142.8 million opening weekend in 2009.

Women and girls have made up as much as 80 percent of the audience for the "Twilight" flicks. Though it features a female lead, "The Hunger Games" drew more balanced crowds, with girls and women accounting for 61 percent of audiences, according to distributor Lionsgate.

Despite its teen fan base, "The Hunger Games" also did well among older moviegoers. Fans 25 and older made up 56 percent of the crowds.

"The Hunger Games" stars Jennifer Lawrence as a teen who is one of 24 youths forced to compete in a televised death match in a post-apocalyptic North American society.

The film is based on the first novel in the best-selling trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Lionsgate plans to release part two, "Catching Fire," in November 2013, and hopes to do the finale, "Mockingjay," as a two-part film installment.

"The Hunger Games" gave Hollywood a huge lift during a normally quiet time at theaters, with the start of the summer movie season still a month and a half away.

Overall domestic revenues totaled $214 million, up 76 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" led with $23.8 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Business has soared this year, with domestic receipts now at $2.4 billion, 19 percent ahead of last year's. Hollywood also has a potentially record-breaking summer lineup coming that includes the superhero tales "The Avengers," ''The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises."

"With this incredible weekend for 'The Hunger Games,' we're perhaps experiencing what could be called the perfect box-office year," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "We're just on a trajectory like I've never seen."

The previous No. 1 movie, Sony's action comedy "21 Jump Street," dropped to a distant No. 2 but held up well in its second weekend with $21.3 million. That raised its domestic total to $71.1 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Hunger Games," $155 million ($59.3 million international).

2. "21 Jump Street," $21.3 million ($5.3 million international).

3. "Dr. Seuss' the Lorax," $13.1 million ($5.5 million international).

The Marianna Arts Festival and BBQ Cook-Off is gearing up with new entertainment, fresh art and, of course, a lot of barbeque.

Dubbed ?Paint ?n? Pork Fest,? the event will be held noon-10 p.m. on April 20, and 9 a.m. until the fireworks display around 7 p.m. on April 21, at Citizens Lodge Park in Marianna. Admission is $3 a person.

The festival centers around BBQ and art contests, but a number of other events and activities will keep locals entertained all day long.

?It?s just good clean family fun,? said Jonathan Fuqua, the event?s chairman. ?We have a lot of local art and talent in the community.?

The Hunky Hog Womanless Beauty Pageant is a new contest this year. Local men will don women?s clothing and strut their stuff for the crowd on April 21 at 5 p.m. Rumors of participation from local law enforcement, firefighters, doctors and more in this event are circling. Each participant will be given a ?pig? name and the audience can help him win by donating to his bucket.

?One of the wives said he?s having a devil of a time finding heels in a size 14,?said the pageant?s coordinator Jeanine Meese.

Anyone interested in participating can email Meese at jeaninemeese@yahoo.com.

Another new addition to the festival is a chicken wing eating contest at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Children will have a number of games and activities to participate in. Evangel Worship Center and Rivertown Community Church will provide carnival style games, said coordinator Tiffany Garling. Local artist Angie Baxter will also have several pig-themed painting activities. The 144th Transportation Company plans to bring some of their vehicles for children to look at. Locals can also enjoy some kite flying on the windy fields of Citizens Lodge.

Rides and activities for older children will be onsite. A mechanical bull, mobile zipline, rockwall, bounce house, and an inflatable obstacle course called ?Spider Mountain & Bungee? will provide hours of entertainment.

For musical entertainment, the headliner on April 20 will be country band the Emerald County Line at 7 p.m. Cottondale Elementary?s choir, Graceville High School?s middle and high school bands, the Marianna High School band and Marianna High School jazz band will perform the afternoon of April 20, along with local band Late Night Radio.

The headliner on April 21 will be the Robert Wayne and the No Name Band at 7:30 p.m. Also on April 21, the Millsap Dance Company, Riverside Beaver Choir, Heritage Harmony, Jayme Michael Bryan and Heyword will all perform.

Participants for some of the activities need to submit applications, a few by a deadline. This includes the BBQ and Art contests, vendors for arts and crafts or food, and 5K walk/runners.

Professional and backyard barbequers alike will have a chance to compete in the Florida BBQ Association sanctioned BBQ contest. The competition will start April 20 and the judging will take place April 21.

The 2 Fit 2 Squeal 5K Run/Walk will be held on April 21 at 8 a.m. at Citizens Lodge Park.

Artists using a variety of mediums, from drawing to quilting, can bring two pieces of their work to the art contest. Children as young as preschoolers to adults can participate. There are a variety of prizes. All participants under fifth grade will receive ribbons.

?It?s basically to encourage people, not necessarily the professional artists, more the beginning artists and students, to give them a place to show off what they can do,? said Lisa Pelt, the contest?s coordinator, of the goal of the contest.

Title: Motlanthe sends birthday wishes to Dr Steve Mokone

Pretoria - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe has sent a birthday message to Dr Steve Mokone on his 80th birthday.

Mokone, who is also known as Kalamazoo, left South Africa in 1956 to embark on a career in European football. He was the first South African footballer to play in Europe and received the Order of Ikhamanga Gold for his achievement in sport.

"On this seminal occasion of your life, your 80th birthday, please accept my best wishes and many happy returns. Reaching 80 years of age is no mean feat... it is simply awesome," said Motlanthe on Friday.

He described Mokone as "simply the best player of the century not only here in South Africa, but at the level of our continent, Africa".

"... You have acquitted yourself with distinction as a South African ambassador on the length and breadth of the global stage. What makes you an exceptional human being is your breathtaking achievements in both sport and the academia. The fact that you earned a PhD degree immediately after your soccer career speaks volumes about your protean abilities, making you one of a kind.

"Your professorship in psychology is further proof of your splendid life and amazing aptitudes that do us proud as a people and a nation," said Motlanthe.

He added that throughout the years, Mokone had been an inspiration to many people for his commitment to the ideals of peace, human development and freedom.

"Indeed, the celebration of your birthday should serve as an occasion to encourage the younger generation to take a leaf from your exemplary life which has been well-lived. Indeed, today is a blissfully joyous moment that you must relish to the fullest!!!! May you live to see many more years! Once again, Happy Birthday," he said.
